Mostly we dress DS for comfort and ease of transitioning to nap at daycare. So we wear lots of soft cotton pants and T-shirts since I feel like napping in jeans or a collar shirt sounds awful. At home he wears the short sleeve/long pants Carter's PJ sets for play since they come in a pack with the long sleeve ones and he can't wear the short ones at night. Nice clothes, collar shirts, jeans are for church or other more formal/special settings.

I do believe in sturdy good quality shoes that fit is feet properly, since he has wide hobbit feet, so he wears those all the time.

Not really, but I do buy maybe 1-2 "nicer outfits" for going to parties. I try not to send him to daycare in anything nice.

There are definitely nicer clothes that I won't put her in if I know that we're going out to play... But that's about it.

It's more that she has a few items that I don't want her to ruin/ aren't playground friendly. So a handful of special dresses. We dont have a yard so no digging in the mud anyway, and if we paint at home I just take off her clothes entirely. Otherwise none of her clothes are that precious. She doesn't go to daycare so I don't have to worry about messes I don't see.

I do try and make sure to dress her appropriately for activities though- like she likes dresses but I won't let her wear one to her gym class since she climbs so much and I don't want it to make her slip. And same as @lamariniere: she has to wear certain footwear for certain activities.

I just make sure DD had jeans on when we play outside at home. Want to protect her knees and save her leggings from holes.

I try to send them to daycare in play clothes and keep the nicer things for at home. If we take them outside during the weekend, I definitely put them in clothes I don't care about. I don't think it's about how much the clothes cost, just that there are certain pieces I really love and would prefer to keep stain-free. I'm also big into proper footwear. If they are wearing rain boots, they can splash as much as they want. If they aren't, they have to stay out of the puddles. Same goes for summer shoes, I buy shoes that are easy to clean and maintain and won't get ruined in the sandbox.

We don't have specific clothes for potentially getting dirty, I just let the girls do what they want to do and hope the stains come out. We got some hand me downs and a few of the things are pretty well loved or not my style, my mom said to keep for play clothes. So I may do that with a few things if I know my kids want to go dig in the mud or something. We don't spend too much on any one item anyway so it's not a huge deal to me if things get used!
