My LO does it at home. Drives me insane. "Time to take a bath!" She runs to the other side of the house. "Let's get dressed!" She runs and hides. I think DH's head is going to explode if she keeps it up.

I try to give her some jobs in the store, then warnings and if she's just not listening we get out and she gets a timeout when she gets home. My lo1 was never a runner so it took me a bit by surprise when lo2 was. It makes me nervous so we've had a few big battles. She refused to hold my hand for about 45 min when we were going to go for a walk to a neighborhood place. I'm sure the neighbors loved her yelling 'No!' for so long but she holds my hand now and I'd rather have that battle at 19 months than when she gets faster.

this is the most frustrating thing right now. LO also likes to run away, at the grocery store or park, or really anywhere she's having fun, when it's time to go. last week was the worst- grocery shopping and she wanted down, then proceeded to run all over the store and I had to chase her like a mad woman with a cart full of groceries and literally wrangle her into the cart so forcefully while she was screaming, I thought everyone was just staring at us. I was SO mad.

after that incident, we talked about how she absolutely cannot run away from mommy, someone could take her etc etc. and we talk about this before we go anywhere now. if she is good, I promise to get her some candy or ice cream at the end of the trip.

This is my BIGGEST pet peeve. I literally see red when LO does this. He loves doing it at the park when it's time to go, or on the sidewalk when we are walking home. Honestly, I never go anywhere without the stroller unless I have another adult with me to help me wrangle him. He gets one warning--I say, if you run away from me, you will go in the stroller. If he runs, then in the stroller he goes and I do what I need to do. I don't care if he tantrums while in there.

ugh - I don't miss that phase at all - I will be honest and say I usually shopped alone for that reason.

Grocery shopping and Target was "me time"

I'll be honest, I cannot WAIT until this phase is over. LO's favorite thing to do is to just run away and make us chase her around stores. She won't sit in a stroller or in the shopping cart for more than 10 minutes before she starts yelling to be let down and the running begins. I spend the entire time attempting to calmly explain that this behavior is not allowed/appropriate, and then we have to leave because I won't let it just go on indefinitely. Then she has a meltdown on the way out.

Phew! How do you handle this particular behavior? I really don't want to spank her in general (and definitely not in public) so I would love to hear how you handle behavior issues while out and about.

I really love browsing/shopping and wish we could do it together, but the experience is miserable these days. She'll be three in November. How long did this phase last for you guys?
