Sounds super normal. My daughter was running at 10 mo but didn't really say much of anything until 14ish mo. She would only respond to her name when she felt like it at 10 mo, mostly because she was super busy. She's 19 mo old now and pulls together 3+ word sentences and DEFINITELY knows her name. Don't worry! He's busy!

@TurtleDoves: just goes to show that we all deal with something.

Thanks again everyone. I think I was just overreacting but ya know i would just want to help my son early if he did end up needing a bit of extra attention. It looks like we are in the clear. As he babbles like crazy and smiles at everyone he meets I have to wonder why I gave so much credence to one Tiny detail. Perhaps it's just because ADHD runs in my family (I am one and my hubs is one in denial) and my cousin has autistic twins. If he did have anything it would be way down low on the spectrum but I feeling pretty good after reading your posts. No matter what he is my amazing little superman!!

@Running Elley: yep lol. Purposely!

Because he's advanced physically, I wouldn't worry. We have the opposite problem. Ours is lagging behind physically, but verbally and mentally (facial expressions, understands words, points to things he wants) he is advanced.
My ped said many kids will excel in either one or the other (verbal/physical) during infancy. They catch up and equalize during toddlerhood. I wouldn't worry:)
Maybe hes a little baby trickster who is just too busy to respond to momma. Playtime comes first, right? ;)

Olive still doesn't respond to her name half the time, and at 15 months, she almost never responded to her name! She just tunes us out.

It sounds like he is ok and you don't have anything to worry about just yet.

After playing in the park with LO I feel a bit silly about my concerns. I forgt about the fact that he interacts and makes friends everywhere we go. So smiley and funny and inquisitive. Plus he makes such great eye contact. I'm gonna watch him but I am feeling a lot better now. Mom paranoia sucks

@looch: @Mrs. Twine: hmm both of you are making me think it wouldn't hurt to have him evaluated and ease my stress. Perhaps I will wait till he is a year old in case he catches up. He is very fun and wild and playful, it's really just the name thing that is bad.

Thank you ladies! I hope you are all right. My little guy is very smiley and happy. He interacts but I kind of feel like he doesn't know his name even when he does respond to me. Time will tell.

I know lots of older kids who might not respond to their name if they are busy doing something else. I certainly would recommend contacting EI or a source other than your pediatrician if you are still concerned and the pediatrician isn't. Ellie has ADHD/ODD and PDD-NOS and also has some motor planning issues. I was told at all of her appointments that she was totally normal and that I was over-thinking things. But I really did have some pretty strong worries and concerns. Just from reading about your son, he sounds perfectly normal (and really fun!), but it's no fun having niggling worries. At worst if he ends up needing any sort of help you can start getting it sooner, and at best you can stop having to feel concerned. :) Both Lorelei and Ellie were responding to their names consistently by 10.5 months. I honestly think he is just fine, but sometimes if caregivers are worried they feel better after getting things checked out.

I had my son evaluated for speech delays at around 20 months and it was the best thing I did, because the therapist did a full evaluation of all his other milestones. The best news was hearing that he lives in our world, which it sounds like your son does as well, so this wouldn't worry me. He'll get there.

I wouldn't worry! It sounds like your sweet boy is just busy with other milestones. The fact that he does respond at times is a good sign :)

E knows his names and almost always responds to it. I'm pretty sure when he doesn't he's purposely ignoring me lol.

I expect my LO to be just like this. She kills it on physical milestones. Rolled early, sat up early, crawled/cruised early, etc. but she has lagged a little bit on social milestones (smiling, laughing, finding her voice, etc). But she hits them eventually. She's almost 8 months and still doesn't babble with consonants or wave consistently. I think kids just excel in one area and lag in the other and I try not to worry about it.

I think your LO's okay. It seems that the ones that advanced physically are often slower on the milestones for speech. LO is 11 months old, babbles constantly, responds to his name, does mama and dada with meaning, pointing, etc. In the past few weeks, he's really begun to cruise, walk with assistance, and crawl on his knees. We're thinking that he'll be walking by 12 months or so. For us, speech came first before the physical stuff. For my LO, he's ahead of his cousins who are late walkers at 15 months. They also were super talky (still are) early on.

E's the same way...sometimes he doesn't acknowledge me at all when I call his name (and he's also been slow on the babbling (little, and only recently), waving (not at all), clapping, etc. But he's hit the physical stuff early.

I talked to his pedi about it at his 9 month appointment and she said that as long as he was responding`sometimes, he makes eye contact, and smiles that we shouldn't worry, and that it's very likely he's just focused most of his efforts on the physical stuff and less on the social. She said it's often the case that babies focus on one or the other, but whichever one they lag more on eventually catches up.

I don't think you have anything to worry about!

@MrsMccarthy: I don't think you have anything to worry about. :) He does respond when you call his name, he may just be busy playing and deep in thought. I think all the other milestones show that he's doing great. :)

I'm a bit worried. My son is 10.5 months and he responds to his name very intermittently. Sometimes I have to say it several times and he just won't respond. He is usually doing something when this happens. My ped is not concerned at all but I sort of am. He is VERY advanced physically. Already walking super well, crawled early and has always been strong. He can feed himself, smiles freely and anyone and everything. He plays with us. He can't wave and only says three words that he kind of uses randomly . He carries things all around the house includin large objects . He isn't super social with other kids but he doesn't totally ignore them either. He will hand us something if we put our hand out and ask for it. He just started clapping if we say clap or clap. He will bang two objects together and on table tips if we do. He loves to grab faces. Has good eye contact most of the time though he can become very focused on other things. He is super affectionate. Trying not to worry but I know if there is something going on better to catch it early. Wht have your experiences been?
