I guess I'm pretty behind! She is 2.5 and she uses a straw cup with lid most of the time. She can drink out of an open cup but ends up putting food in it or her hands and I get annoyed and then she tips it over when it's not quite empty... But I will let her do it with water. I don't feel like cleaning up a cup of spilled milk though.

Her preschool/daycare requested we work on open cups with her when she started at 2y2m because they only use open cups and she was just starting to use them at home. She was a mess for a while but now at 3y2m we mostly don't put tops on for water cups when we're seated. She's fine with open cups except for dunking her food in them. 🙈

After 2, we just used a child size cup even if it's juice or milk. She drinks water all over the house in a regular cup and we rarely have accidents. I'll put a lid if we're having a smoothie not at the table or something but that's rare too.

Here, most kids start daycare at 1 and they only use open cups. My daughter has been really good at it since about 15 months (she's 27 months now). We only use lids for her straw cup of milk.

My 3yo still almost always uses a cup with a lid. I keep the same milk cup going in the fridge all day, so the lidded cup works well. I should probably give her more opportunities to use an open cup!

Xander is 3 and usually uses a cup without a lid. The only time we give him a sippy cup is if he's going to be drinking it in the living room - mostly because we're afraid Logan will spill it!

3.5 and does not use a lid at home (except for when she drinks smoothies she wants a lid and a straw). We started using small glass mason jars with her at age 2, and she doesn't spill that often. Will use a lid when we go out to eat.

My 3.5 year old uses one occasionally, and does really well with it but 80% of the time she uses a straw cup with a lid. We bring water to all areas of the house, or out and about with us it just makes sense. My youngest (almost 2) can use one with minimal liquids in it but usually we stick to cups with lids for her.

Does your LO use a cup without a lid most of the time? I'm curious when kids transition to those for good, or if it's more cup preference.
