Ugh. Almost 2 and he hates hats, he won't keep them on. Of course he is super blond/fair and we live in Florida and he LOVES to play outside. Sigh. What I do instead is use kids/baby spray sunscreen, spray into my hand, then rub all over his head into his scalp! His hair is very fine and thin so he has a lot of exposed scalp. He looks a little silly, but whatever. I know as a kid my scalp was constantly burned and it hurts so bad. A (17m) would never keep a hat on. And D (4.5y) will sometimes wear a baseball cap, but that's his fashion choice, it's not for sun. They apply lotion every time they go out (including face and ears). And there's a pretty decent amount of shade on both outdoor areas. We do sunscreen in the morning, they do in afternoon. DD2's play yard is mostly shady. Never had a problem with DD1 with no hat. DD2 just yanks them off whenever I try (she's 15 mo now). I see a few kids here and there with hats, but most don't wear one. DD is so into fitting in she wouldn't wear one of the other kids don't. Fortunately (?) she seems embarrassed of her new bob cut at school and has been choosing to wear a hat all day everyday since. DS is a red head with fair skin so we got a UV protectant wide brim hat with an adjustable head toggle...it was $40 but this is our second full summer with it and I think it will last until school at least! So he gets both - sunscreen and a hat! Do you have a hat that you keep at daycare/school for your LO to wear outside? If so any recommendations? We have a Columbia Bora Bora hat for DS1 to wear with us but I would like to find something cheaper for him to wear at school (less than $30).
