My MIL hasn't bought LO a single outfit. My mom buys them on clearance and if I don't like them she has no problem returning them. I have kept a few I am not thrilled with - mostly because they were such a good deal. I really am not going to stress over what my baby wears, especially since we don't leave the house that much.

My LO is the first grandchild on both sides so to say she's spoiled is an understatement. Luckily, my mom has awesome taste in clothes and we usually shop together so I love almost everything she buys for LO. There have been a few things that are a little too frou-frou for my taste, but even if I don't love it, I always have LO wear it at least once b/c hey - my mom bought it with so much love. It's one thing if the clothes were old, tattered, ruined, gross, etc. - no way would I put my baby in clothes like that. But if it's something new and bought/made with love, then I have no problem having LO wear it at least once :)

Luckily I don't have this problem as such - mil never ever buys anything for LO (but her grandson is spoilt rotten - but thats another vent) and my mum only ever buys clothes when I'm there with her so I get a say in the outfit and she pays. Mil snuck into LO's room one day and put in her collection of clothes that she kept from when her daughter was a baby - which I pulled out again because I was never going to dress Lo in any of that.

@Mrs. Blue: Oh I absolutely agree there is a line that needs to be drawn and not putting your child in something you find inappropriate is perfectly reasonable. It's just sad when a perfectly nice outfit is given (most of the outfits in question are Ralph Lauren - definitely no offensive or tacky sayings there!) and they go to waste. I've told my mom that the next time she goes to their place, she should take all of the clothes back and save them for my next baby if it's a boy!

Ugh, I don't know why this issue bothers me so much but it does. Ah well, at least I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in thinking it's common courtesy to use gifts that people buy, within reason of course!

Nope (no guilt). I do keep all handmade items though.

Personally, I don't usually buy clothes for others b/c I don't think it's fair to put them in the spot of feeling like they need to like it or use it b/c I see them often. I wish others would do the same!

This just came up tonight actually.

I am due in June and my MIL told me she saw a shirt that says "I didn't do it, nobody saw me, go ask grandma" or something to that effect and I am just not into the cutesy sayings on baby clothes. But she thinks it is hilarious and wants to buy it and I would never know how to tell her that it isn't my style.

My FIL asked if I would be offended if he bought the boys a onsie that said "Save the Tatas." I nicely said maybe that wasn't our style b/c I wouldn't have put them in that regardless of who have it to them. But generally, I someone gifts us am outfit, I plan on putting them in it at least once.

Stuff from the shower, I can't keep track of. But clothes from family? Certainly. They outgrow stuff so fast and there's a point where it's ungrateful-making a point out of NOT putting your kids in anything like your SILs are is so rude

Grandparents, yes. Other family members we dont see often....i'll return these.
I found out my aunt was asking about the clothes she bought LO as she hasnt seen them in a picture yet. They are size 12m! Baby is only 3m!

I do admit I have returned both Christmas gifts MIL bought. I despise plastic toys that make noises, but despit telling everyone that before LO was born, she keeps buying them. And they keep getting returned. No 3 month old needs a plastic "musical ipad". Well not mine, anyway.

as long as they are season apporpriate and new, yes! Some family members gave us some used stuff from people they knew, and I didn't feel bad not using what I didnt like. I figure it's already been used by someone else, so it's not wasted and it didn't cost them anything!

@Anagram: Totally understand about not putting a baby in something from when you were a baby and doesn't really serve a practical purpose other than to look nice. I'm talking more along the lines of a knit sweater that would be perfect for cool days and a knit blanket that is great for covering us, or putting on the floor for a bit of padding. I've included a pic of my LO (several months ago now, sob, she's getting so big!) wearing a sweater knit by my mom and another using the blanket she knit.

I think it's really rude too, especially if it's handmade. DD will always wear something once, a few times if it's handmade, and if it's handmade and dressy, I'll make it a point to have her wear it at 2 different social functions (even if it's not my style).

The only gifted clothing we haven't put on LO has been the impractical stuff, a couple of items that weren't seasonally appropriate and an overflow of knitted hats and booties for our summer baby!

I have a family member who SOLD a lot of her baby gifts and I found this amazingly hurtful. She also sold her wedding gifts but that's a whole other story...

@Ree723: Very interesting question. My son is the first grandchild on both sides, and both sets of grandparents spoil him like crazy. I really appreciate how much time and thought has gone into their purchasing clothing for my boy, but in the beginning, it was definitely a situation where our tastes didn't match. I did put him in his gifted clothing because I knew it would make them happy. After, I had conversations with both sets about what kinds of things we prefer, and they've been better at picking things he will be more likely to wear.

As for croched/handmade...neither grandma knits, but my mom's friends gave us some hand knitted items. I put them on him for photos, and the friends were thrilled.

What does the hand knit stuff look like? My mom gave me the most beautiful, crochet'd infant outfits that she'd saved since they were mine as a baby--- they are little gown/bonnet sets. And I *love* them, and will keep them forever, but I think they are too precious for a baby to actually wear! I mean, they are too hot for summer, too "open" knit for winter....but I would take a picture of my baby wearing them, maybe.

They are kind of like this: one in stark white and one in school bus yellow.

The part about only Gap clothes in strange, but I would stay out of it. It's kind of between the ladies and their MILs.

Huh. We just got back from returning a couple of gifts of clothes that we both hated. The giver lives across the country though, and included a gift receipt, so I suspect won't know...and wouldn't care. Now instead of a couple of ugly, expensive things, we have a bunch of cute, reasonably priced stuff. Win!

@shopaholic: Yes, fortunately both grandmas have stopped buying clothes for the babies that don't wear them but it still makes me angry. I am staying out of it for the most part, but have mentioned to my brother that he is being pretty thoughtless and rude.

@Monkula: you're not a bad person! It's different if it doesn't seem to bother your MIL, and I also think if they are garage sale purchases, it's more a though of "oh Monkula may find this useful" rather than going out specifically shopping for an outfit for your LO.

Only if everything else is dirty? My mom tries with mostly good results to factor in my taste but I have to admit that my MIL gifted things they never wore, or rarely. I encourage grammas to buy pajamas. All the fun of clothes shopping, and who cares about the style!

Not if I don't like them, no. My MIL buys her some pretty ugly things from the 80's. She gets her some cute stuff too and I will put that on her, but I can't bring myself to put on some of the outfits.

She wears every gifted outfit at least once. In person if we see the giver, or in a picture if it's someone long distance. They are babies! They have no sense of style! Why not put them in the outfit for the sake of making your loved ones happy??

Ha ha. No. And now you have made me seem like a really bad person so I am going to go now and don my sack-cloth and hide under a rock somewhere. Does it count when the gifted clothes are thrifted or garage-sale purchases of Dale Jr. shirts and the like? Because I just *cannot* put that on my child. And it doesn't really seem to hurt MIL's feelings. If it was something special that she made, or seemed really set on one of my girls wearing I would do it once where she could see just for her benefit. But if it was something... awful... I might just burn it once we got home. Not if she made it, though. Gosh, I really think I am a bad person!
