DS1 has a late Aug bday, close toLabor Day. People in the NE do take vacations right before school starts back up so we've had issues in the past with guest attendance. This year we moved his party up a week and everyone is coming. Hope it doesn't rain!

DD1 is end of Sept, and not around anything, DD2 is on Groundhog day, which is NOT celebrated....but it is because its my birthday too!
But DD3 is Due between Christmas and New years this year. So its good to see what others say about this.

Ds1's birthday is over spring break and a few days before St Patrick's day. It's a pain as people travel. We did his birthday early this year.
DS2 is a few days after New Years. So that ought to be fun too :bummed:

DS1 was born on Martin Luther King Day. We had his first birthday party which was family only that weekend. But for his second birthday party which included his friends we had it on the following weekend since some of his friends went on vacation that weekend.

@birdofafeather: This is something I'm concerned about with baby #3 - I feel like Halloween is such a super-fun kid holiday (candy! costumes!) that her birthday festivities will either have to be amazing to compete with the excitement, or they'll pale in comparison. Hopefully she's a little early like her sisters, and will arrive in mid-October to avoid this!

DD2's birthday often falls on Mother's Day weekend, but that doesn't impact her (just me, haha).

DS1's birthday is a week-ish before Valentine's Day (which was his dd, hence my username). His birthday shopping is done at Christmas, and then we split his gifts.

DS2's birthday is in the middle of summer, so not near any holidays!

LO's birthday is right around Labor Day (this year it's the day before). Last year (1st birthday) we just had a family party, so it was easy for everyone to travel to us. This year (2nd birthday) we are inviting some neighbors and friends in addition to family, and only one family can't attend bc of travel plans. I'm not particularly worried about it going forward. I can always do a different weekend if needed.

DS was born on July 4th. The past 2 years we had a BBQ in the afternoon in which we invited only family. It was a good turnout. Next year we will head to the mountains for his birthday. I think at this stage its doable to have something on the actual 4th in which people will show up but as he gets older and wants to include friends we may have to either do the weekend before or after, depending on what day the 4th falls on. I personally love that he is a 4th of July baby - fireworks and people celebrating. I think it's pretty cool.

Both LO's have birthdays around holidays and yes it has affected party planning. LO2's bday this year was on mother's day so we just had all the grandparents come over for joint celebration. Last year we had a party for him on Saturday and a few people couldn't attend because they had mother's day plans for both weekend days. LO1's party this year will be mid-week because otherwise we'd have to celebrate over Labor Day when I know several of his friends will be away. It's just a minor thing to take into consideration but not a really big deal.

@bluestriped bee: I didn't miss not having a party too much. In elementary school on the first or second day of school my mom brought in a cake for the class. I was the most popular kid for a week! The few birthday parties I had were epic though.

My LO's birthday is 11/11 and Veteran's Day is always 11/11 so she will always have a federal holiday/no school fall on her birthday. It's not a traveling holiday for most people but it is a somber day. We usually plan her parties on the weekend and do something special for school (bring in a treat) the day before

DS was born at the end of March. The year he was born it was spring break for many kids and Easter was a couple days away. I think this will be a constant for him. DD was born on NYE. So for her 1st birthday we planned it for early January rather than late December.

DD2's birthday is two days before halloween, so when halloween falls on a weekend day, we'll have to contend with that, but i'm not worried about it! just don't always want to throw a halloween themed party, unless she asks for it!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Aww, I didn't think about the start of school. Were you ever sad as a child that you didn't have a birthday party with friends? Unless you enjoyed yourself so much on vacation that it never came up.

@Mrs. Pen: True. I can see my family using Labor Day weekend for the twins birthday celebration.

My niece and nephew were born near Labor Day and we do a party for them every year on Labor Day. Maybe it's just a new family tradition for us :)

I will say I had my wedding on memorial weekend and had a lot of people not come as a result. My son's birthday is end of February and we have had issues with people not coming due to snow or sickness. It's been kind of a waste of money the last few years to put together these great parties and hardly anyone shows up. For now, we're just sticking with family.

My younger one was born a week before Christmas. I feel kind of bad for her that it will always be hard to have a party or anything. Meanwhile I have never actually had a party for my 3 year old anyway. Her bday is end of July so not close to any holidays really.

DS's birthday this year was on Thanksgiving; we had his party the day after and piggy-backed it with a football party to watch the games.
As he gets older though its going to affect when he's going to be able to have friends over - as I don't think Thanksgiving weekend would work for that, so we'll probably have to do the week before.
Even with family it's hard to ask them to travel another day, so may end up just doing his bday parties in conjuction with thanksgiving get togethers.

My SIL gave birth 2 weeks before me so it fell at the end of Thanksgiving break. At her 1st birthday LY, she thought no one would RSVP but tons of people ended up coming. I guess it really just depends what your families/friends typically do....

Like Labor day, Memorial day, July 4th, Thanksgiving?

I guess I'm excluding Christmas and Easter.

Does having their birthday fall on one of these days (which are federal holidays and most get the day off) affect when you celebrate and have a birthday party?

When the twins were born, I thought it was great that they were going to be born around Labor day weekend. I thought it would be perfect for them to have a birthday party on a 3-day weekend.

But now that they are coming up on the 1st birthday, I wonder if people would actually go to a party on a 3 day weekend that normally a lot of people travel. I know this isn't a big problem. Most of the time when I travel during Labor day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving, I'm going to see family so we could easily make it a birthday party for family and maybe have the ones for friends on another day.

I, also, understand that their birthday won't always fall on Labor Day weekend depending on the year.

I'm not really sure why I brought up the non-gifting holiday part. I guess I'm thinking I don't have to worry about Christmas and Easter where gifts could be a dual purchase (like a Christmas gift and a birthday gift). Though, I guess anyone with a birthday around a holiday will have to worry about if people will come.
