Bursts and bits. He surprises us all the time by suddenly using new words, combining words or being way more receptive to ideas we weren't sure he understood. It's really fun.

So far it has been one linear path, I have never experienced that infamous "language explosion" that everyone talked about!

Steady. She's constantly picking new things up. @lamariniere: We notice the same thing. Except instead of French, LO picks up a very thick southern accent and phrases from her grandparents. Same thing, right?

Not just language but a lot of her learning. She was struggling with counting and then she suddenly got it. Same thing for letter identification and letter sounds and puzzle making!

I think it is generally pretty steady but with bursts due to situations. For example, we are visiting my ILs right now and my son has had a HUGE burst of French over the last few days. When we first arrived he was mostly speaking English with German thrown in, and now it's almost exclusively French and I can definitely hear a change in the quality of his French.

I'm noticing huge bursts in lo1. Lo2 hasn't made much progress in the time we've had him, so I'm expecting a burst from him too.

Hmm not sure. I've definitely noticed though that when he's working on a new physical skill, all language development comes to a halt. And vice versa. It's been interesting to watch.

In bursts, usually during my school breaks. Probably because she has a lot of diverse sensory input.

Our daughter is suddenly making so much sense, shortly after we returned from a trip overseas visiting my parents. I thought it was maybe just my imagination until Bee mentioned the same thing yesterday!

Our trips are filled with sand, beach and lots of water - I think all that sensory input helps calm her sensory needs, because she had a huge burst of development after her trip last summer too!
