@Rainbow Sprinkles: We get a
"take this paper Rx home, if he isn't better in x number of days OR his fever doesn't respond to the tylenol and advil, call us and go get the abx"
So we rarely use the prescription but always get the piece of paper.

He has been on antibiotics 3 times, once at birth, one after RSV got worse/didn't resolve and they thought it was something else, once for something else, might have been pink eye? All from different doctors. (Moved a lot!)

Since we have been here, we've had maybe 3-4 ear infections, not done the abx but had the option.

We've had two ear infections and antibiotics for both, HOWEVER our pedi said that they only prescribe if it was either in both ears, OR the kid is showing signs of major pain. The first was true for our first ear infection and the 2nd was true for our second.

We just went through this yesterday - our does not. We did get them yesterday because LO had been out of sorts for about a week and they saw something in her ear last week, but said that they will typically wait and see if the child isn't too bothered by it because the infections are often viral.

@rachiecakes: yeah T has had one round of ABX ever -- he had a double ear infection last year and I had a sinus infection so kinda knew how he felt. Our pediatrician gave us the option...and we took it!

They will wait and see, but the only two times I've taken her in and she had them I had already waited a while- first time her ear drum had burst by the time I realized it was an ear infection so immediate antibiotics. Second time she had had it for a week already and not getting better so they gave them. They would have waited if it was earlier.

So far, yes. And this is at two different pediatrician offices.

For DD she had an ear infection at 2 and 4 months. I think it's pretty common to prescribe for babies under 6 months.

For DS we actually caught it pretty early but she said because it was early and he was already in so much pain she'd like to go ahead and prescribe it. He was 3 and it was the first antibiotics he'd ever taken orally.

Nope. She will usually call in the rx just in case so it's there, but advises you to give it a few days to see if it improves on its own first.

We haven't had ear infections yet but lo1 has been prescribed antibiotics three times and two of them I think were excessive but were by a colleague of our ped with allowing us to wait and see a bit longer. Of those two times once we didn't do them and it resolved. The third time was for pneumonia about a week ago. (Eta and we did do them then, she was running a fever a long time and was spiking in the 104s.)

@rachiecakes: ours is the same. Except we did get antibiotics for strep. They're just very cautious about them, especially since ear infections usually resolve themselves. My kids haven't ever had them, except for strep, once. :)

Our ped does not. He suggests lots of saline spray and to wait it out.

Our 4 month old had 2 terrible pneumococcal ear infections that were built up with pus. They were horrible! Instead of antibiotics he performed a tampenocentesis (twice) which drained all of the pus out of her ears. They drained for weeks, but she didn't need any abx.

When my 3 year old went to the ER for pneumonia and RSV, the ER doctor saw she had an ear infection and also didn't prescribe antibiotics for it. She said just wait and see. It was nice that her views lined up with our doc's (and ours). He feels very strongly about avoid overuse of antibiotics.

No, he doesn't just prescribe antibiotics for anything.
My doctors in the area are 'wait and see'. There are signs hanging in the offices about how the practices won't automatically give antibiotics.

If by immediately you mean that we have to go in for a visit, they make an assessment and we decide together on the best course of treatment, yes.

Believe me, its not an easy decision to put my son on antibiotics, because he's allergic to some kinds and other kinds give him terrible diahrrea.

So far yes; she's only had one ear infection, well double ear infection and they put her one 3 different things before it cleared up :/ I wasn't happy and I definitely have no idea if the antibiotics even did the trick but she was 10 months old and I think under age one or two it's their standard practice. I hope next time we can avoid them.

Yes but my daughter is a champ and we normally don't know something is up until it's a bad infection. We've been through two sets of tubes now because her infections were so bad most antibiotics didn't even work and our doc didn't want to keep doing rounds of strong medicine.

Not always. We've caught it early enough that he told us to do ibuprofen with a nasal spray for a few days but if it didn't get better to take antibiotics. We didn't end up needing them. However one time, he put DS on antibiotics right away, I assume he diagnosed it later that time.

We've only ever had one and it was 2 weeks ago. DD is 6 so I felt fine with her taking the antibiotics. Her dr. could clearly identify that it was a middle ear infection and I know that if he's suggesting treatment its only because its truly necessary. He typically waves off 98% of things I wonder/worry about when we go for visits, I fully trust him.
