@SproutBee: And I find it extremely comforting that as a pediatrician you still have parenting questions just like the rest of us :-)
"Pediatricians: they're just like us!" 😂

Yes, but gently. She has an advice sheet that she hands out at every visit and starting around 4 months it had a few notes on sleep training. But, it was never discussed.

Fwiw, LO slept like crap for her first 7 months, but I could never bring myself to do any kind of training. At about 7.5 mos, she figured it out one day and has slept through the night regularly since then (other than illness, etc) I'm glad I ignored the advice sheet!

I'm a family doc and see a bunch of kids and I always ask about sleep and if families are happy with how things are going. If they aren't I'll offer suggestions but not push any particular agenda. Though I will say that my advice pre-LO and post isn't quite the same! I think I'll always try and find docs that are parents going forward :)

Our ped practice endorses extinction CIO at 2mos. I respectfully ignored that recommendation.

I don't use my ped for parenting advice. I use them for medical advice.

@SweetiePie: I agree with your last comment whole heartedly! Even as a pediatrician myself, I think we are medical experts, but not necessarily parenting experts. And I def think there's a difference between those two things! They can overlap, but they are separate entities.

At my 4 month appt my pediatrician asked about his sleep. I said he was sleeping 7pm to 4am, small bottle (3oz) and then back to sleep till 6:30 or so.
She said that because of the long stretch he was doing and how small the bottle I gave him was (daytime feelings were up to 8oz), it made sense to wean the feeding and then do CIO if I was comfortable. I was :-)
It's definitely a personal decision, but I am very sensitive to sleep so I was relieved when she suggested it. It helped me to know that I wasn't going to hurt him by getting rid of that last feed or letting him cry.
She does speaking engagements around my city on sleep, so I think that it's something she feels passionate about. She's not pushy so I'm sure if someone wasn't into it she wouldn't make them feel bad about it.

As a side note I find it to be such a relief that so many Pediatricians have different opinions on every topic (sleep, feeding, etc). Makes you realize that aside from true safety issues, you really can't do anything "wrong" or "right" - just what's right for you!

Our ped said "if you want to sleep train or cry it out, wait until 6 months"

She left it pretty open ended. But then again she's pretty laid back. She offers her suggestions but doesn't jump all over if something doesn't go according to schedule or plan. We are pretty laid back too (and LO is admittedly fairly "easy")

@SproutBee: just to add my personal, anecdotal experience, we never sleep trained. He breastfed on demand through the night until 2 years old, sometimes driving me crazy! But now at 2.5 he falls asleep like a dream most of the time, and sleeps 8-9 hours uninterrupted, and then often another 1-2 hours after that. So he has beautiful sleep, and he wasn't trained in any way.

Her belief is, in general, that "it's ok for babies to cry", so I believe she would support sleep training, but she's never suggested it to us. And I'm grateful for that, because that's not something either DH or I were ever interested in.

Our regular pediatrician doesn't at all but one of the other doctors in the practice did- before we even discussed anything. I was actually really upset by it, my daughter was sitting in my lap instead of on the table (she was like 8 months old!), the doctor came in and started talking about separation anxiety and she'll get over it quickly if we just leave her in her crib. We also got advice about cradle cap before moving onto the ear infection were were actually there for.

@SproutBee: does she think sleep training is somehow beneficial to your LO's health? If not, I don't get why she cares. Our ped asks how long our newborn's biggest stretch of sleep is but beyond that he's never addressed sleep issues with either kid unless we specifically asked for advice.

Looks like my pedi is the exception then. :) I really like her otherwise and agree with her medical advice (my 2.5 year old sees her too and have always been happy with his care. He started with her at 1 year of age), but was surprised by her push. Not to be judgemental, but she doesn't even have kids! Which I actually think sometimes makes it easier to give unsolicited parenting advice. Like, until you live the chaos, you don't realize that one size doesn't fit all. :-P

Only when I bring it up. Except now that I think about it, our sleep issues with DS1 were related to food issues, and so the push she gave us to "sleep train" had more to do with night weaning, which she thought was necessary to get him to start gaining weight (and she was right.) She hasn't mentioned anything with DS2, who doesn't have the same weight gain issues.

No, he has written advice for the different well baby visits that the nurse gives you and you review while waiting to see him. Otherwise he just asks generally how things are going with regard to sleep. The 2 month well baby visits talked about sleep training and what age he recommends it for if the family wants to try it.

I'm an FP and only give advice on this if the parents have sleep concerns. If they aren't worried, neither am I. I'm much in favor of sleep training - it worked wonders for my LO- but it's a personal decision. I try not to give unsolicited advice except for safety issues.
