Mine doesn't. I live in AZ & still have my SC area code. I've had this # for 10 years so don't feel like changing it & it was local so I could talk to my grandma with no long distance charges. My husband on the other hand, just got a cell phone a month ago (yes he'd been without one for 6 years....true story!) and his has our AZ area code.

I have my hometown area code. I'm not holding onto it for any nostalgic reason, more out of convenience. I'm more confused why anyone would change it? I would have to specifically ask to change it, otherwise it just transfers from cell phone to cell phone. Also everyone already has this number, which I've had for about 10 years. Wouldn't it be more inconvenient to change it?

Cause it would be a pain to change the number and update everyone/thing, and I'm lazy?

Actually, mine does match. We got new phones/carrier last year and got new numbers then. We could have kept our old ones, but for us, it was sort of deciding that this was "home" to us now?

Before that, we lived in Pittsburgh but had Philly numbers. For a few years after I moved to Philly I still had a New Orleans number, which I definitely held onto for nostalgia's sake--I wanted something from home after Katrina. D kept his upstate NY number for like a decade after he left because he loves it there.

@LovelyPlum: it's really simple. You sign up via Google and you get choices of numbers. It's linked to your phone number. So if someone calls you at your Google voice number your phone will ring and the automated machine will tell you so and so is calling. Do you want to take the call or send to voice mail? Your voice mail can be listened to via the Google voice app and it's also emailed to you as a transcript (horribly hilarious btw) or a voice file in your email too I believe.

I use it any situation where I don't want to give my personal number out.

Mine doesn't match, and DH and I don't even have the same area code! It's just way too much of a hassle to change it, especially when between the two of us, we've lived in 7 states over the last 9 years. When we do finally settle somewhere, I imagine we'll both get the same area code.

The biggest pain is that DH's area code is one digit off from the area code where we live now, and we have to constantly tell people, "it's not ____", it's "____". That part, I could do without. Otherwise, it's not a huge deal. You can even have different area codes on a family plan with Verizon!

My husband refuses to change area codes. Candidly, I kept mine because I knew I would always be moving back home eventually (and I was write - returned home last year!). I think it's going to be weird for the next generation when you have to say things like "I need to call my daddy, do you have long distance?"... or does not having long distance even exist anymore?

My area code is WI, but I live in CO. I've had the number for at least 10 years so I didn't want to go through the hassle of updating everyone. Plus, my parents didn't have a cell phone other than an emergency pre paid one so having a local number they could call without long distance seemed easier.

@mrbee: It's to save other people the confusion of remembering (or, I should say typing) a new #. And inertia. Probably mostly inertia. I still have an Atlanta area code for my cell # It does cause issues sometimes. Older people will just stare at me blankly and say, "But you live in _____," over and over and over again. Some people will forget that it's my number or wonder how they got an Atlanta phone number in their phones/records/whatever. I should change it. But I'm just sooooooo lazy ;)

I lived in another area code for a few years but didn't change it because I knew I would be moving back to original area code land.

I will say that I'm a teacher and a large number of parents only have phones with different area codes. It makes it challenging because the school phone doesn't make long distance calls and I'm not comfortable using my cell for safety/privacy reasons.
