Yup - at first I scoffed at the idea but I don't mind it now. The folder comes home Monday and goes back Friday. It's very simple stuff that correlates to what they do at school at week. Like Monday was practice tracing then writing upper case L. Just 5x. Tuesday was lowercase l. Wednesday was the number 1. Thursday was practicing recognizing their name. 5-10 minutes each night.
She is also at UPK at her elementary school. This is the real thing! LOL

There don't have homework at LO's pre-K. There are occasional family things, like we had to decorate a section of their classroom border together to represent our family -- that's all she's had to at home since school started.

Yes - but not assignment/workbook type assignments. It's all fun and things to encourage social sharing: make a collage about your family, bring in an item for show and tell (and come up with 3 "clues" about the item to get friends to try guessing what the item is), share your favorite activity of the weekend, find and bring in a fall themed item, etc.

We get the homework on Thursdays and turn it in whenever the following week. The point is to get familiarity with homework, but just as much about encouraging togetherness activities at home, and sharing with the class too.

@babypugs: ok, that is a little ridiculous! Our daycare is infant through pre-k/jr k and they don't start homework until pre-k. Which means all the kids are age 4+ and will be attending Kindergarten the next school year.

DS is in preschool and has homework every night. Reading is every night (read with child and child reads there DRA leveled book). Math,, Spanish, Writing, Phonic, and Sight Words are once a week. So each night we read together and then do one subject.

Yep - once per week and she has until the next week to do it. This week's was, learn or practice the Jack & Jill nursery rhyme, play catch with a ball, find things that are wrong in a picture, fold up junk mail into small pieces and say the letters of your name to 5 people. They are pretty minor things to do and she thinks that it's fun.

This is kind of blowing my mind. I think the "look for circles" and "practice x skill" assignments are fine, but I had no idea that preschools would send home worksheets (even if it's not mandatory for the kids to complete them). I'm not even a little bit okay with that for my DD, and would definitely switch if that happened.

@mauxie: my son loves doing it too! When they first told me he would have homework I was a little skeptical, I mean it is preschool! I didn't have homework until 2nd grade. Times sure have changed. But it is just one worksheet once a week and he gets so excited when he brings it home. I hope the excitement continues on to Kindergarten next year...

Yes, 3 times a week. They literally take a couple mins and the teacher encourages us to sort of let LO do it on her own (aside from reading directions, if needed). Yesterday's was a very simple maze on a worksheet. Another one was drawing lines between matching objects or something. DD likes to color so she ends up spending some time doing that.

I'm not a huge fan of homework but DD looooves it. They don't get punished for not turning it in but I think all the kids/parents do it.

LO attends a nature based preK and they don't have homework but 2-3 times during the school year, they send home a free picture book and some extension ideas. THe kids are encouraged to draw/journal themselves doing the ideas (they are things like visit some farm animals or build a snowman). And they have a wall for photos with the families who do the activities. They aren't mandatory but we have had a lot of fun doing them!

DD1 went to a "play-based" (supposedly) preschool last fall. Her teacher used to teach the pre-K class, but had my DD1s age (3-4y). They would do at least one worksheet every day (and often they were not age/grade appropriate), and routinely came home with packets of worksheets -- it was never called homework, but I guess was more work that they could do if they/you wanted them to. I ended up pulling her out of that preschool mid-year because I thought it was ridiculous.

Yes, he gets a worksheet every Wednesday. It varies between tracing letters, coloring, cutting, or all three. If they turn it in the next day they get to pick something from the treasure box. At back to school night his teachers said it was just to get them use to doing something at home and helping them with their skills.

Yes, it started in mid September. It's kind of unfortunate because DS is having fun with it, but DH takes it much too seriously and gets upset if he scribbles on it or doesn't finish a line. So far I've been unable to convince him that it's more important that the kid enjoys the homework at this age. Neither of us even had any homework till we were six. It's going to be a long year...

LO 1 (4.5) is in a pre K program through our public school district. She had some fun homework for the month of September. She had do things like look for circles and objects in different colors around the house. She really enjoyed it!

More traditional worksheet type homework will start in October. I think we get a packet each week.
