Great advice abt not asking if they had fun. I need to NOT do that. I used to have a routine where I would ask who she played with and she'd tell me about the specific people she would play with. Now she just answers, Friends. I ask, Which one? Kids, she replies. I feel like it getting the teenage shutdown at two!!

I have no experience with this yet, but this thread reminds me of all through school when my parents would ask at dinner what I got up to and I'd reply "not much". Infact DH still asks me what I get up to each day now and I reply exactly the same!

@Andrea: Speaking of which, I need to stop asking Bee, "how was your day?" and "did you have fun?" when she comes home after an evening out! Or maybe the rules are different for adults? Haven't figured that part out yet!!

@mrbee: yes, I think I am just annoying her so she clams up. I think this tactic could work for her. Thanks!

@Andrea: I used to ask how school was each day, and then I read in a parenting book ("How to talk so your kids will listen...") that the "how was school today" question gets old for kids!

I tracked down the excerpt:

[attach=1/13/moe02q.400x600.image.png]

Now I start off by saying something positive, like "Boy am I glad to see you!! I missed you so much!" Then I let Charlie settle down a bit, and will ask him if he went to the playground or if he had fun with [friendname here] or something along those lines. He will usually tell me a quick story, like how he and his found a spider in the kitchen and they put it outside...

I found that the book was right... if I just give it some time, he does love to talk about his day!

@looch: LOL! One day she told me that they watched "Super Why" and I was really surprised. Turns out that they didn't, of course!

@MamaMoose: Yeah, she'll answer yes or no to those questions, but doesn't elaborate.

@Mrs. Jacks: OK, I will check with her teachers!

@T-Mom: I do ask her if she pooped. LOL!

My son lies a lot, so I have no idea if what he is telling me is true. We had a family friend visit a museum the same day as a day when G visited and there was a special exhibit with dogs in the afternoon. She asked if he saw the dogs and he replied " oh yes, in the cages." I asked my husband later and there was no exhibit that morning, so ?????

I agree with Mrs. Jacks. I get more response when I ask her "what challenge work did you do today" vs. what did you do today?...

I also ask her who she worked with and stuff like "did you poop?"
:-)

I'm trying right now to encourage LO to speak in longer sentences. I'll ask her what friends she played with. But really, the questions I ask her are mostly "yes or no" type. Once I asked, "Did you play with Owen (her bff) today?" and she replied, "Yep. I kick Owen." I asked, "Your kicked your friend Owen?" and she proudly said, "Yep!" I really have no idea if she really means what she says. I'm just hoping to God that she doesn't.

Our preschool has Montessori compass, do they log the day for the little ones. Lala wouldn't talk much about her day until I started asking, " what works did you do today?" and using Montessori language. Then she opened up. Aske her teachers what words they use and you might get more info!

Maybe ask leading questions? Like "did you read at school?" "what books?" "which friends did you play with?", etc.

How can I encourage DD to tell me more about her school day? She's never been interested in telling me very much. I ask her as we walk home from school and I usually try again later during dinner time.
