I'm worried about this being an issue in the future when I go back to work. The few times that I've pumped to replace a nursing session I barely pumped what he likes to drink in a bottle (4-5 oz at 12 weeks). He only nurses 5-6 times per day as it is, so I will probably have to add in some pumping session before I go back to work. I was thinking about starting two weeks in advance just to make sure that my supply is really good and to have some back up in the fridge or freezer.

The bottle feeding could be one of the problems. She may be overfed. Check this out: http://mommynewsblog.com/paced-bottle-feeding/

DS is 19w and so far I've been able to keep up but my total amount varies day by day. I'd suggest adding in an extra session during the day and give yourself a few days to a couple weeks to get adjusted to being back to work. I am pumping more now than I was when I first went back to work.

With DD, I was quickly unable to keep up and just supplemented with formula.

Thanks for the tips! I am going to try to add another session while I am at work and also maybe 1 extra one after she goes to sleep.

Nope. It has really been a struggle. I usually get enough to cover 2 of her 3 daytime feeds, and sometimes part of the third (which is then saved until I have enough to make another full bottle). But pumping enough to cover all 3 feeds in just two pumping sessions is a rareity.

Even with a private office, it is really difficult to schedule pumping around client/work conferences, mediations, and depositions. And while I gladly set aside the time to pump, it makes it really difficult to be an efficient worker. I am considering weaning at around 6 months (LO is almost 5 months now). I think I spending more time with her will be just as beneficial, if not more so, than spending extra time at work pumping.

I have been able to keep up with LO's needs (and build a large freezer stash). However, I pump more than LO gets a bottle. At the moment, 3 pumping sessions cover 2 bottles and I usually have a few oz to freeze.

Most people have to pump more times than LO gets a bottle, so consider adding another pumping session (or two).

Also, your output might increase once you are a little more comfortable pumping at work. When I went back to work the first few days I wasn't producing as much as I would when I pumped at home. As I got used to my new routine (work, pumping, LO in child care, etc), my output increased.

Good luck!

I average about 32 oz / day and she averages about 27 oz a day. But while my mild production is pretty steady, her intake can vary all the way from 22 oz to 32 oz depending on the day. I agree that nursing can be much more effective at removing milk than pumping (I always wait for second letdown and do breast compressions the entire time... I don't even wear a hands-free bra). Can you add in another session until you know you're producing enough?

No. LO eats about 30 oz a day and I'm only pumping about 20-25 oz even though I pump 6-7 times a day. We supplement with formula. I'll be going back to work in a few weeks and am hoping to up my supply before then.

For the most part my pumping keeps up with LO's needs. She takes 15 oz. while I'm away from her M-F. I pump twice at work and once before bed. Sometimes I fall asleep without pumping the third time, but luckily I have a pretty great freezer stash to supplement.

It does sound like you'll need to add some pumping sessions. I'm gone for 12 hours every day and he eats 18-20 oz during that time. I was pumping three times at work, but not getting nearly enough. I needed to add a pump session while I get ready in the morning and after he goes to bed at night. I'm thinking I need to start pumping in the night now too :(

I wouldn't worry about thinking you'd been starving her. She would have let you know if she was hungry all the time.

Haha...it's 4am and I'm about to go pump! I bf at 7am, he takes 2 bottles of 8-9 oz at daycare (I'm gone about 9 hours), and I nurse as soon as I pick him up at 5. If he weren't sleeping through night and I couldn't pump if have big problem!

Oh and cool thing is that once you get the oz need met, she won't need more ounces because your breastmilk will increase I'm calories in relation to her needs.

@sunny: being gone almost 9 hours, you should have at least one more pumping during the day too. It doesn't sound like you will get quite enough but it will be much closer. In the morning, I would pump one side and nurse the other. I got like 5-7 oz the most of any pump.

As a pp mentioned, baby is very efficient at removing milk. Your pump may not be as efficient so you likely aren't starving your kid. I also suspect you are nursing about every 3 hours. Is that right?

I also found nursing baby whenever I was was home was great at upping my numbers. And during a growth spurt I would put in one extra pumping for about a week to catch up.

She probably drank that much from you too...you just produce slightly different amounts at different times. Maybe you can pump after bfing to try to increase your supply a bit.

I do.. but I've been exclusively pumping 4 - 5 times a day. It's a pain, but I know if I cut down any more I wont be keeping up with demand. Right now I think I produce about 6 oz. over what she eats every day (@ 3.5 mo.)

How long are you away? La Leche says 1 1/2 to 2 oz every hour you are gone. I often had to pump one more time (morning) to make enough for each day.

Today LO ate 4 bottles of 3 oz each... COMPLETELY exceeding my expectation of needing 2 bottles of 3 oz. Thankfully she was at home with my MIL rather than at a daycare, so my MIL was able to give her some extra bottles that I had in the fridge.

However, I only pumped 3 oz in the morning and then 2.5 oz in the afternoon... so I didn't even keep up with what she ate at all. Up until now, she has been breastfed for all her meals, except for the last one where we give her a bottle.

I'm so stressed out because:
(a) does this mean I've been starving her?!
(b) we're going to run out of milk in a few days and today was my first day back at work!

Was my LO just eating extra to comfort herself?

Do you keep up with your LO's bottles when you pump?
