@Dandelion: Same here! I was shocked that when I realized it wasn't the best thing for me (severe ppd, and I was pumping, not bfing) it was dh who said, "but it's best for her." TBH it hurt a little but I am happy at how bound and determined he is to give lo the best of everything.

@Cole: That's really sweet! DH is definitely finally getting excited now, at 10w, but he does not care about researching! I think I may make him research carseats though. He's good at that sort of thing.

I have been surprised at how excited and into this pregnancy he is. During ttc he almost seemed meh about the whole thing but he is crazy excited and doing more research than me!

I was surprised he was ok with bedsharing. Before baby came along, I insisted that she sleep in her crib from day one. He didn't argue with me about it. Then she was born and we co-slept for 12 straight weeks.. and we still bed share on occasion at 27 months!

@Mae: Yes, and cloth diapering! I did not think he'd like that. But I think the savings were all he needed to hear. He's cheap!

I was really surprised how DH was for breastfeeding. I thought he'd go along with it in a "whatever" sort of way, but I've heard him defend it to his parents more than once that it's the best thing for LO and us.

I was surprised he was down to cloth diaper. I thought he'd think I was nuts but he was totally on board. Also when I mentioned wanting to go with a midwife and try natural childbirth I thought he'd flip (he's the sort of guy who requires $40 in OTC meds to weather a cold), but he immediately said he'd support whatever I wanted. Then when we talked more about the reasons why he was actually super on board thinking it was a better idea for me.

We haven't really talked about too many specifics beyond stuff that is relevant to the newborn period, but I don't actually anticipate any issues with any of my other parenting ideas. Just from his personality I feel like we have meshing styles of (anticipated) parenting (generally chill) so I think it will be fine.

There are things that I was hesitant to bring up with DH, because I thought he'd be against them and I'd have to make a lot of effort to persuade him, but when I did, he was immediately all for it! The one that shocked me the most was cosleeping. I think maybe he was on board so quickly because of how much he loves having the dogs sleep with us. He was completely against having them sleep with us when we got our first dog, but quickly changed his mind. So maybe if he hadn't had that experience he'd feel differently?

He's also totally fine with anatomically correct dolls, dolls as toys regardless of LO's gender, baby led weaning, positive discipline/not spanking, being team green, and probably some more that I'm not remembering. All of these are very different from how he was parented and how he's seen his family parent, so I was really surprised that he mostly just wanted more information, but liked the idea of all of them. And he does feel completely comfortable arguing with me on these types of things if he doesn't agree, so it's not just that he feels like I'm the mom so I must know more than him.

Anyone else surprised by how their SO reacted to your non-mainstream parenting ideas?
