Yes, California offers a program that I believe is designed for families who do not have access to insurance, and do not qualify for free Medi-cal. We don't use it, but it's good to know that there is an option available.

We do, but it's for people in need. ie, a family of three that makes less than 30K.

MA has great ins options, even before the ACA. Everyone is required to carry health ins & if it's not offered through your job or you can't afford it, you bought through the state based on income or got it for free depending on income level.

@locavore_mama: Yeah, DH pays, but he'd have to pay anyway for this particular plan because we wanted a PPO plan and not an HMO, so since it's the family plan it would make no sense for us to pay for additional insurance. Though I had no idea dental was included in Child Health Plus.

Just Medicaid and CHIP in my state (and frankly most states). NY, CA, Penn are anomalies!

nm. I see that's just what they call their Medicaid program.

Nope, in SC it's either Medicaid or you're on your own.

But, we're moving to NC next year and they do have a good program there.

I'm in NY State and we have Child Health Plus

It is NOT medicaid. Virtually anyone qualifies and your monthly premium is salary based. ie we pay $60/month (it was $30 last year) for M and practically everything is covered including dental until she is 18. DH and I get free insurance through my employer.

BTW: I didn't emphasize the not medicaid part in a negative way. Just that when I tell most people about this plan they assume it's Medicaid and that they don't qualify.

Check here to see what, if anything, is available in your state.
