They are usually only one lane in each direction and they have traffic lights because they are adjacent to communities normally so they aren't faster unless the highway is majorly jammed. On a related note, when I moved here I kept seeing the signs for Frontage Road and I thought, "Man that road is everywhere!" We have a few parallel highways though (ex, Rt. 6 and rt. 6a). The "a" highway is more residential but runs generally the same route as the big highway. We also have a service road that is largely empty save for a few residential neighborhoods. We don't have them, but I don't think they would work anyways. I love it because, if there's a lot of traffic on the highway, I just drive on the feeder and can usually get to where I need to in a reasonable time. </p>
