My niece had a problem with holding food in her mouth but we discovered it was because she has food allergies. She wasn't swallowing foods because she had had an allergic reaction to one of the foods at some point and she associated the swallowing with the pain.

My oldest (now 11 y/o) did this when he was in the tyrannical threes, lol, and it was a power issue. Once, he held a piece of steak in the side of his cheek (like a chipmunk) for over 3 hours! He just didn't like it, and was really determined not to swallow it, hahaha!
Charlie could be testing his boundaries, but I doubt it. Just ignore it, don't make a big deal out of it, and it should fix itself soon enough.

Yes, my 30 month old son has and still does up until this day but not to a point where his whole mouth is full. Sometimes he'll eat a blueberry and then keep the skin in his mouth for some time until I notice it's blue. Or he'll eat a grape and do the same thing. It's not a concern to me since he usually swallows it or spits it out when I ask him to. I notice during meal times he will hold food in his mouth if he's not a fan of what he's eating... and will spit it out before the next bite. I haven't seen it as a control/power issue (yet!) but do keep an eye out. So far, distraction is still working. I'll give him something to play with and then when he's not paying attention put another bite of food in front of his mouth and most of the time he'll swallow it and then open his mouth for another bite. Yes, I still have to feed my 30 month old about 75% of the time, even if he knows how to use a spoon. *Sigh* Yes, a whole other kind of control issue whatever that is called!

Charlie has started holding a bit of food in his mouth now and then. I've heard that when older kids do this, it can be a control/power issue. But for a 22-month-old toddler, I don't think that dynamic has kicked in just yet...

I've been doing research online, and a lot of people say to just ignore it and it's likely to go away. Anyone had experience with this one? Would love to hear from others who have seen or experienced this!
