Every night. Some days take longer than others for LO to fall asleep, but he always falls asleep eventually. I think what helps him is taking a couple books to bed with him, usually the ones we've just read. One days when he's not drowsy enough I see him in the monitor reading.

We had great sleepers who didn't need us to stay in the room until we moved to floor beds. Now it's very touch and go. My DS will sometimes let us leave, and other times he will bang on the door and say very sad things. There are also some nights that we will stay until he falls asleep because it is too sad. This from very disciplined CIO'ers in the past (when they were babies).

@mrbee: We're going through the same thing. But the one thing that works for us is the trick I remember you talking about a while ago, which is to leave the door open when we leave. She's fine with us leaving as long as she can hear us.

After we put him in his crib, we make a very quick exit. Can't stay in his room for more than a few seconds or else he'll stand up/cry. Made that mistake about twice in the last year I think. As soon as we leave he either goes right to sleep or plays a few minutes, then falls asleep.

Every night, I've always put her down "sleepy" since she was 6 months old. I didn't want her to "need" me to sleep. So we rock & read 2-3 books, and I give kisses and hugs and put her in the crib and she cuddles with blanket and is out.

He's almost always fine with it at naptime, and at bedtime I can usually leave 6 out of 7 nights without hanging out until he's asleep. He usually lays down and plays with Scout until he falls asleep.

He will go through phases of not wanting to be left alone, but we take the page from No Cry Sleep Solution, and just keep trying until he goes to sleep. Sometimes I can distract him with a toy, other times I have to sit in the doorway- but this is usually only once a week or sometimes a couple days if he's off routine until he adjusts again.

I have never stayed in the room until she falls asleep. She's 26 months and I always put her in bed awake and walk out for naps and bedtime. I don't mind if she talks to herself and is awake for a bit before falling alseep. Sometimes she talks to herself for an hour or more before falling asleep at bedtime. - I think she's processing everything that happened during the day. Sometimes she falls asleep right away and sometimes it takes longer but I don't stay in the room

Depends on your definition of toddler, but at almost 17 months he is usually awake and frequently standing in his crib when I leave. He cries probably 1/2 of the time for 1-3 minutes.

Yes! Every night! I never wanted to have to lay in bed with her to get her to sleep, so we have always encouraged her to fall asleep on her own.

Lately we do a silly tuck-tuck-tuck routine and I tell her I love her and if tomorrow is a sleep in day or a daycare day and out I go!

I've been putting Olive down for the night lately, and sometimes she just won't fall asleep before I leave the room. So to save hours and hours of time a week, I will sometimes just put her in her crib and wait until she's settled down, and then tell her that I love her and I'm going to be right back. Then I will leave the room. I've been surprised that she is usually ok with this, and just lets me leave... and then falls asleep on her own!

If she doesn't fall asleep on her own, then I'll go back in the room and work with her to get her to settle down more. Sometimes she will refuse to let me leave at all though, and on those days I just stay in the room until she's asleep.
