Poor O - that sounds heartbreaking! What about using a Tot Clock? You can adjust the brightness and it stays on constantly (here's a link if you're not familiar with what I am talking about: http://www.amazon.com/My-Tot-Clock-Original/dp/B00FCC5E5M ) which may help. The other thing we do with DD, who admittedly has not had nightmares but is not a fan of the dark, is use a string of lights that we keep on all night. Right now, it's her little artificial Christmas tree with LED lights that stay on all night, but the rest of the time we use a strand of dragonfly lights, also LED so they don't get hot. We just have them strung across her wall and she loves them.

Not sure if that helps at all but I hope sweet O starts having more peaceful sleeps soon!

@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: we went through about a week long phase, just before Xmas where LO would wake up every morning around 6am with one loud scream. About half of the time she would go right back to sleep and the rest, she wouldn't settle so we got her up for the day. I just chalked it up to toddler weirdness (she's 15 months) and thought it was too soon for nightmares..or maybe not.

I know that cheese is said to cause vivid dreams (in adults, at least) and LO has been off cheese for the past week or so, so maybe there is a link!

Yep, my 2.5 year old has a lot of nightmares about robots. We got her a wall light in the shape of a bug from IKEA and let her have it on all night. She loves her bug light. I also have some lavender essential oil spray and I tell her it's "good dream" spray and spray it for her before bed-- she loves the smell and seems to relax when I spray it. These things haven't fixed the waking and screaming issue completely, but they do help.

@sorrycharlie: oh no, that's quite a lengthy wakeup gap, sorry mama! Hope she has a better sleep tonight. My DD use to get nightmares every once in a while but has been having nightmares so often lately. The only way to calm her is if I pick her up and pat or rub her back so she'll fall back asleep. Nap and night terrors are so awful! Poor babies.

my 2.5 year old has had them since she was about 9 months old. She will just wake up screaming and inconsolable. I just feel so bad for her :(

N has had a couple. Poor kid. We don't know what else to do either. We just console him the best we can. Crossing my fingers that it ends soon for all of us.

@sorrycharlie: HAHA yes I would too. E usually darts into our room after a bad dream and then we have another bed guest the rest of the night.

@LuLu Mom: seriously - I wanted to cry but didn't want to freak her out more, ha! after the first nightmare the other night I talked to her through the monitor which scared the living hell out of her :( when I went in, she clung to me and cried, "mama phone, livy scared!". talk about making you feel like crap! I felt awful.

edit: I guess if I randomly heard my mom talk above my head in the dark I would freak too!

@sorrycharlie: Poor O! We've been battling this for a couple months, the other night she was freaking out about the man in the truck...which just breaks my heart. She's also came in our room crying about the giant and the monsters. :(

@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: interesting! I never thought of the diet factor. We can't seem to find a link between anything..it's so frustrating. She is 2 years 3 months - she had a nap nightmare yesterday too and woke up sobbing. It's heartbreaking! :(

@HappyBaker: ugh, seriously. I was all, oh a newborn will be fine! O has been STTN since 12 months old! JOKE'S ON ME!!! lol. She was awake from 12-5 last night. like w.t.f.

I'm following this because my fourteen month old will wake up screaming from a nap, inconsolable sometimes. We thought nightmares. It's not that often, but if it becomes often, I plan to keep a food log. I think there's some evidence that certain foods could trigger them. Not sure if it would help!

We are having the same sort of thing happen and unfortunately I have no advice on how to make it stop. My DD isn't telling us what exactly is scaring her, but she wakes up at least once or twice every single night screaming and crying for us now.

We've started letting her sleep with her light dimmed instead of off, it seems ridiculously bright but that helped a little. Other than that I have no idea what to do either! It's also so hard to get her back to sleep now that is she smart enough to know we are leaving her room / not coming back when we try to leave.

I seriously can't believe we are throwing a newborn into the mix now, after she had been sleeping through the night for months with no help from us!

UGH. I've suspected this for awhile, but my LO just had a recent word explosion and has been able to tell us about her nightmares at night. It's so sad!

Aside from using a nightlight and reassuring her, I'm not really sure what else I can do. She won't sleep if the door is open (nosy!). The twilight turtle has been our best bet, but the dang thing times out after 45 minutes. I'm seriously considering the Vicks Starry Night Humidifier just for the stars to stay on!!

Does your toddler struggle with this? What do you do?
