My 5 yr has been doing this forever - a year, maybe 2??

I kinda wonder if he is waking to pee but then automatically just comes in my room.....

Anyway when he does wake I have him pee and then I take him back to bed - I will lay with him for a few mins then I leave - he usually falls back to sleep pretty fast - some days I feel like I still have a "baby" - its rare that I sleep all night w/o being woken up

If he does it again I do the same thing and then I tell him "this is it - if you come in my room again I will not be putting you back to bed"

Some nights he stays in bed and other nights I find him asleep in the office area of our bedroom the next morning :silly:

We also have a clock and she gets sticker on her chart for staying in bed until the light goes off. She's also responsible for picking out her clothes and dressing herself before leaving her room in the mornings. It works well! She gets a prize when her sticker chart is full. This system teaches her a sense of responsibility and that she needs to earn what she receives. I don't give her new toys and other things randomly anymore. She needs to fill a sticker chart first!

@sandy: that's interesting! i wonder if it will work on DD because she's pretty strong-willed… not sure she'd stay in bed just cuz a clock tells her to… hmm.

@Mrs. Train: isn't it the freakiest feeling to have a small body breathing at your bedside until you wake up? My DD did this a lot when she was 4.. She has since stopped doing it. Thank goodness!

We didn't really do anything special. I think things got better after she dropped her nap.

we just take the boys back to bed whenever they come in to get us. I have to say though it can be quite alarming or to be honest a little creepy. James just stands by the bed and stares at us until we wake up. If they say they are too afraid i might stay and rub their backs for a bit but not long. We have had James on a floor a few nights because he had a bad dream but other than that they usually just go back to bed. I would like to say that sleep gets better at some point but we are at 5 years of not really having a night to ourselves very often. Its probably just having a lot of kids that does it. It seems like at least once every night someone wakes up.

@mrbee: @Mrs. High Heels: have you tried a tot clock? My friend's daughter started doing this around 2.5 and so she got a tot clock and her daughter stays in her bed until the clock changes color. She said the only downside has been that her LO has had a few accidents in bed bc she won't get out of bed to use the bathroom bc the clock hasn't changed color :/

@mrbee: yea i realize this just started for you, but it makes me a little discouraged knowing that even at 3 1/2-4ish they still wake up at night for things. i was hoping this was something they'd grow out of by that age. i wonder what age kids really do grow out of this type of thing without any sort of effort on our part (as in, how long should we expect to wait this out? i don't know if we can go on for another year or two!)…

@Mrs. High Heels: This actually started after we moved! I think the issue is that now that we all sleep/live on the same floor, Charlie knows he can just come over to our room any time he wants...

Before, he knew that we slept downstairs and so when he woke up around 4 or so, he just went back to sleep...

@mrbee: hahaha nope, i wish i had a solution! our toddler keeps us up and wakes us up way more than our baby.

and you're actually scaring me with this post considering charlie is about a year older than noelle! i was hoping she'd grow out of this in her 3's!

@mrbee: yeaa we've been dealing with this for almost a year now. let us know if you find a solution. it's rough, but we're kinda riding it out hoping it'll pass. i feel like toddler sleep is harder than baby sleep to figure out!

DD has been doing this off and on for about a week and a half (she's 2y10mo), but more like at midnight. I always put her back to bed in her own room. I know it's bc she recently figured out how to open doors (we live in an old house with the crystal-looking knobs and they're kind of tricky). I figure it's yet another stage of sleep training. It never ends!

@Mrs. High Heels: Wow, sounds like we are in the exact same boat!!!

One night I was too tired to go to Charlie's room, so he actually snuggled his way into my arms and slept there for two hours. I don't want that to become a habit, so I'm looking for a solution!!

@mrbee: N has been doing this ever since we transitioned her to a twin bed. she wakes up anywhere from 4-6 am… and she only wants her daddy.. so he ends up sleeping with her in her bed until morning. she doesn't want to sleep in our bed, she wants us in hers!

Since we moved into our new apartment, Charlie has started leaving his room around 4 am and coming to our bedroom... and telling me that he's scared. If I take him back to his room then he goes right back to sleep... hmm, I think he's just figured out that he can sucker me into co-sleeping with him for a few hours in the morning!

Does your toddler/pre-schooler leave their room and come to your bed at night?
