I went thru a phase of this with both kids - funny thing was my DS would cry at drop off because he didn't want to go and then at pick up refused to leave because he loved school! drove me batty!

@hummusgirl: Hahha I know I get so embarrassed like they think he's mistreated at home! Maybe try asking then to prep him more too?

@winniebee: That's great! I was just going to commiserate. I've gotten there at the same time as other parents, and their kids are all "Mommy! Mommy" running in for a hug, and mine is like "NO! [whine] NO! [stamps feet in anger]"

I feel like his teachers must think we have a terrible home life or something, but I swear I'm just going to bring him home and play and give him a nice dinner! Argh. :bummed:

I wanted to update that my sons teachers have been giving him multiple warnings before I arrive at the end of the day....and it's working! He hasn't resisted me at all lately. I guess he is the type of kid that just needs a lot of prep to transition.

@pregnantbee: I haven't read it, but I literally just ordered it through scholastic's reading club today! And going boneless is pretty much what happens. :)

Hahaha K (3+) has started doing this too. I once threatened to leave, and he called my bluf. I now just tell him that I will pick him up and he'll cry in front of his friends and embarass himself, and then normally he comes with me. Not saying I should get a mommy medal for that one, ha!

He's always fine as soon as we get outside, it's just hard since pickup time is of course during "free play" - his favorite! Also I pick him up at 3 and more than half of his class stays until 6, which makes it harder.

@BananaPancakes: @winniebee: Have you ever read Knuffle Bunny, by Mo Willems? He calls that move "going boneless." It's such a perfect description. We sometimes have leaving daycare issues, too. No real advice other than that you can ask him, "hey, guess what we're going to do when we get home!" Just make it sound really fun? That sometimes works for us. Lately, he likes driving to see some of the neighborhood Christmas lights, so that's enticing enough to get him out of there. :) Hey, at least they like it there?

@Andrea: I think even getting his jacket on is a great idea....I come at the exact time every time so it's pretty predictable.

@BananaPancakes: Thanks for the chuckle! I call that move the "dead fish." I would threaten something, but T doesn't heed to threats....he has no desire to please me and apparently when I discipline him it doesn't phase him, lol.

I think it's a good idea to ask the teachers to prepare him for pick up. Our teachers do this and it makes all the difference. They have the kids waiting patiently with their jackets on with backpacks lined up by the pick up door.

They didn't do this when we were at a daycare and parents would have this same problem of wrangling their toddlers out of there.

He doesn't fight me about leaving the classroom, but lately he's gotten obsessed with this damn drainage pipe/retention ditch and he runs away from me on the walk to to car almost every freaking time. And when I go get him, he loses all his bones and I have to drag him to the car. I told him I was going to spank him in front I his friends the other day he had me so pissed off. He straightened up, but I now have to haul ass to he car to try and get him distracted because if he gets it in his mind that he's getting into that pipe, it's a 10 minute battle to get him out of there.

@edelweiss: errrrr bribery worked for a little bit ("you can have gummy bunnies in the car!") but he's over that and it's not so enticing when I try to bribe him anymore LOL!

my friend has days like this and often carries out her son even when he's screaming. i like the idea of asking the daycare teachers to give him a heads-up. also, maybe there is a little special something you could tell him to look forward to each day once he gets in the car or gets home? like, a gummi bear or cookie? okay yeah i'm resorting to bribery here.

@BabyBoecksMom: hahaha they seem very similarly spirited :) I can't imagine a more stubborn or willful child (mine, not yours). I have carried him out kicking and screaming on multiple occasions....he goes to a progressive school so of course I feel like I get the side eye from everyone.

@winniebee: No suggestions, but I'm starting to think our kids are the same! W HATES when I pick her up because she doesn't want to leave. She completely ignores me and I end up having to carry her out like a football.

Nope! She runs to me when she sees me. If I get there a little after 5 she wants to finish her little snack they give at 5 but otherwise, she starts towards the door saying Dada. Girlfriend wants to get home to see her Daddy.

My son (2.5) absolutely loves his school. No protesting at drop off! He goes to school 9-3 and is one of the older kids in his class....and doesn't nap (he's the only one). Which I've gotten over, but it means he is very tired when I pick him up. When I pick him up, he doesn't want to leave. Like, runs away from me, shouts "no go away!" and generally won't do anything I ask of him. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and not only is it embarrassing, it's also very physically difficult for me to wrangle him in to get him home. I will soon be picking him up with a newborn in tow and cringe at thinking of pickups. I was thinking of asking his teachers to prepare him a little better for pick up, including giving him timed warnings or something.

Any suggestions?
