@erinpye: agreed!

We actually got a specific water filter with an added fluoride component so that we don't get fluoride at all. It's another substance that I don't believe is necessary and avoid.

No, and I have it removed from our water. I am another one of those "loonies" who believes it's completely unnecessary for the human body, and perhaps dangerous.

@winniebee: Yeah but then if they take supplements with flouride it still ends up in their digestive tract too right? Yeah I will ask her doctor about that

@banana: Hahaha

Our water has fluoride in it so we just let him drink tap water from time to time. Our peds dentist said drinking a few cups of tap water a day is just fine for getting fluoride into his system. He also drinks bath water. :)

We have well water here and no flouride. At his 15 month visit, the pediatrician pasted flouride on his teeth. He didn't protest too badly. Maybe your doc can do this instead.

@Mrsbells: I think it's because there's something about flouride in the digestive tract? Or swallowing too much?

@locavore_mama: @sheskrafty: I did call our water department and there is no flouride added in to our water, only trace amounts that are naturally occuring

@BunnyDragon: yeah this is what confuses me because all the toothpaste that has flouride is for kids who are atleast 2.5 so why is safe for them to drink it or take it as supplement but not safe in their tooth paste?

I do not give my 24 mos old any fluoride. Our city water is not treated with fluoride. Our pediatrician recommends fluoride supplements, but I talked to our dentist and he doesn't like to prescribe them until a child is at least three years old. His reason? Recent studies show that we don't really benefit from early fluoride treatments. I decided to take the advice of my dentist since he's the teeth expert.

We do, but our water here isn't fluoridated. I probably only give it to him 3-4 days a week but his pedi said that was fine.

Our water is fluoridated so I haven't given her supplements. We had one pediatrician who prescribed her supplements, which we didn't fill, but he was the same one who was surprised I was still breastfeeding at 6 months and had some other weird advice. No other pediatrician since has suggested it (we used to go to a large practice where they would just stick us with whoever was available so we saw several diff ones). My thought with fluoride is a little is beneficial, too much is detrimental.

N is only 11 months old but avoid fluoride. There are too many chemicals already in our air and area, I am not adding another one. ( I know this makes me sound loony.) My family and I have done a lot of research and decided it is not best for us. My parents never gave us anything with added fluoride. I do agree with other posters to call your local water company and ask your level and do your own research. Also you can reach out to water treatment companies like Culligan to test your water.

@locavore_mama: @sheskrafty: Thanks I will try and find out from them. I find this whole flouride thing confusing. If flouride is so important for toddlers how come they cant use flouride toothpaste

@mrsbells: Contact your water department. They should have the level of flouride, if any, that is in your water.

@Mrsbells: call your local municipality or look on their website? I want to say NYC does have fluoride added.
I know none of my niece or nephews take supplements.

My 16 month old doesnt take any supplements with flouride. Her pediatrician has prescribed supplements for her ever since she was 6 months old but I dont give it to her because she doesnt like it and I wonder if its really necessary. One of her daycare teachers was asking me about it and saying if she doesnt have flouride supplements her teeth will have problems. I was never given flouride supplements as a child so I dont know how true this is
