She's in her high chair for dinner, but during the day when it's just her and me we sit at her little table and chairs. She is not good at staying seated, but she does stay near the table and eats well. She likes to come closer to me so she can steal all of my food :)

The kids do pretty well about staying seated while they're eating, but we're working on keeping them seated until everyone at the table is done. Usually I end up holding DS on my lap once he's finished, and that keeps him entertained; with DD we just tell her she's not allowed to leave the table until everyone is done eating. She whines about it, but she mostly stays in her seat.

@looch: maybe you can ask daycare if that is what they have them say? I agree that they need to ask permission first!

Oh, I also wanted to mention that my son says "excuse me" and then gets up from the table, no idea where he got this from, must be daycare...but I do want to try to change the behavior to be him asking to be excused, not a statement of fact! Any ideas?

@looch: I agree, we got her to sit at the table a bit longer by letting her sit in a regular chair or on her knees.

At some point, we will work with her on it, but I know she sits well at the table at daycare.

My son sits for as long as it takes him to eat his meal, which I consider a victory at the moment.

I have found that he does better when he sits in a regular chair, no booster, no high chair.

She has always stayed seated. I think it's not a big deal if you start them off being seated for all meals. This is all she knows so she doesn't think to leave the table. When she is done, she needs to ask "May I be excused from the table?" before leaving her booster.

Yep! Both of my boys are good at that. My oldest who is 4 stays seated but wiggles around here and there while eating. At home we use a booster with straps and I used to require him to put it on, but now that he's better at not getting off he can do whatever he wants. He will put it on and take it off many times during a meal. At restaurants he doesn't use a high chair anymore so it's harder to keep him from moving around. He won't leave and run off but his butt is constantly moving around and around like he has ants in his pants or something! No real tips or tricks here. Still trying to figure out how to make him eat faster sometimes!

He's always has stayed seated but he's a big talker at dinner time. I mean, the entire dinner conversation is dominated by him so we usually finish dinner, then help him out by saying "[number] this many bites left". My only tip is to really engage him in conversation. We do the highs and lows of our day at the dinner table sometimes too.

We sometimes struggle with keeping G seated at the table!! What's helped though is putting a list of reminders on the wall near his seat:
1. Don't get up from the table until you're finished eating
2. Take your plate & cup with you to the sink.

A couple times (when it was still really bad) if he got up then we'd pick up his food & he'd ultimately be done eating... The times he wasn't finished he wasn't to thrilled with the outcome & we finally started seeing some progress. Now if he gets excited about something & wants to show us right then/get up then we just ask "are you done eating" & when he says no we just remind him to not get up until he's finished.

It's not perfect but definitely better than it was!
