@googly-eyes: thanks-it's so comforting to know that baby will let me know! I admit I'm getting caught up on the ”he should be...” thoughts, will work on this.

@Silva: I'm looking forward to being where you are, and enjoying the process. Fortunately, the baby is not picking up on our anxieties and seems to love food so far! Also love the rainbow collage idea-what will you use for blue...? ;)

@MoonMoon: I think for my next baby I will try to take a picture of him/her covered in food from every color of the rainbow and make a photo collage.

I actually found it easier to take her places once she was able to eat finger foods because it keeps her busy! Thats actually how we discovered she was really ready to switch to finger foods- we gave her some bread when we were out for lunch.
Now we can just give her bits of whatever we are eating, and she stays entertained as restaurants or parties.
Occasionally I get one of those pouch purees, which are super convenient if you're going to be out for a meal. I was shocked at how quickly she figured out how to suck the puree out, but you can also squeeze it into a spoon.

I hope you are able to ease some of your anxieties about feeding, it has actually been one of my favorite parts of parenting so far. Watching her develop the ability to feed herself was so fascinating, and now she is so dextrous its amazing. I love how much she loves all the new tastes, and watching her get excited for her favorites.

I didn't have quite that many worries because we didn't do blw, but I do think its ok to skip meals sometimes but your LO will let you know when it's not ok anymore. The one thing I learned was o follow your lo's lead. I was worried when dd got to almost one and ha only recently made the jump to some table foods by was on more purées than not. Soon after that she rejected purées pretty much altogether. I wish I had trusted that she would get to it on her own instead of worrying so much about "teaching" her to eat.

Thanks ladies! It really helps to hear your experiences.

@Greentea: we're definitely doing some purees too, and iron fortified baby cereal.

@Silva: I love it! I think I'm going to follow your lead and embrace the mess so baby can have a lot of fun with this,I don't want him picking up on my stress!

@bisous: so cool that our babies are the same age, and we're kind of in the same spot, feeding wise. I've been trying to make sure he gets breakfast every day, and then see where the day takes us for other meals. The other day it occurred to me, we can't just run out of the house any more if baby needs to eat...! Then I panicked, ha.

@jedeve: yes, I'm really trying to follow his leads and going from there. Definitely not adhering strictly to BLW or any other method. Glad to hear it's going well and clicking with your LO!

I thought it was so stressful! We started with one meal a day and then added in breakfast and did lunch last.

We just did purées and added in finger foods when he developed a pincer grasp around 8mo. At one year he is just now on mostly finger foods.

I would say don't worry too much about doing a certain method or feeling like you have to live up to a certain ideal of ways to feed baby! Mine really hated chunky purées for a while and didn't get into finger feeding later than other babies. He eats like a champ now though! My MIL was so worried about us giving him dairy under a year (and just told me again I should cut it out of my diet!)

You'll slowly figure out what LO likes and doesn't like and his to work with that. Not that you just give into everything they like and avoid what they don't. But for instance my LO loved Os and not bananas so I kept introducing bananas but would mix them up with Os. I learned he didn't like thick purées and to water them down a bit and that he was more interested in a new vegetable when it was mixed with a fruit. And that he was happy with stuff cold so we could skip the microwave!

Just keep going. I think solids daily is important but I wouldn't worry about missing a meal here or there at this age. You will figure it out!

@MoonMoon: I am in a similar situation. LO is 7.5 months and I made a commitment to start feeding her everyday this month--and not worrying about how much/whether she eats at all. I am trying to think of it as more exploratory than a necessity. Last month it was really stressing me out, but I figure taking it slow is better than what I was thinking last month (which was, can't I JUST nurse her...forever? Lol!).

We try to feed her twice each day but sometimes sleep or nursing has to take priority! There are only so many hours in a day and I figure solids aren't critical to her nutritional needs at this point!

Eta: I also rely on daycare to feed her on the three days a week that she is there! That helps.

We gave her a few soft foods in chunks to start, then did chunky homemade purees for maybe 3 weeks or a month? We did one meal a day until she was 8 months old. And if it wasn't convenient, we skipped it. At 9 months she is eating three meals a day, and seems to really want those meals. I also give her an afternoon snack, but that's usually just to keep her busy for a minute.
We quickly moved to table foods and by 7.5-8 months she was just eating whatever we ate, cut into small chunks.
If blw is stressful or scary, you can do some purees. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Purees were so much fun, we got her naked and handed her a full spoon.she loved playing in it, and I felt like she was still guiding her eating experience because we handed her the spoon.
Who knows what the future holds, but at 9 months she eats a huge range of things with ease, and loves all kinds of favors.... Curry, spicy spaghetti sauce, chili, whatever.
We have tons of hilarious pictures of her totally covered in food. It was so joyful to see her just relishing in it!
She also occasionally "stores" things in her mouth. I don't give her hard foods, like raw veggies very often because I do worry about choking with those.

Our doctors advice was to just expose her to as many favors as you can, and not worry about amount or anything else. Just try to make food fun, and a family experience. It gets better! Watching her devour a whole serving of my homemade spaghetti and meatballs last night was a wonderful feeling :)

I find it an added stressor as well. Honestly I am trying not to worry. LO is 7.5 mos and we have missed a day a couple times. As long as baby is nursing and getting a little iron rich food when you/baby can... I wouldn't worry. BLW did NOT work for us. We do super simple purees. We just steam a fruit or veggie every three days... enough for the next three and feed her once a day after nursing.

It took until LO was about 9 months or so to really like it. When I weaned him and daycare knew, he really took to them. It wasn't until a year old that he got them as full meals.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: @katsupgirl: LO still nurses like crazy-especially at night. I guess he's not getting enough solids to make a difference yet...I'm glad you guys also took pauses here and there.

@blackbird: yes to the chipmunk cheeks! He hates it when we try to stick our fingers to check, and I'm always afraid we'd push the food farther back...ack!

@Blueberry: thanks for commiserating! I give LO oatmeal with banana or apple in the mornings too...some days he eats more than others.

Now on top of other things I'm wondering if his poor night sleep is due to food-too much and upset tummy? Too little and empty tummy? ...

It is very stressful! LO is 8 months and he gets half a banana with oatmeal every morning with his breast feeding. He gets some snacks (like puffs or grapes) throughout the day. We don't really do the three meals a day thing but I often wonder we should. LO nurses for his "main" meals and I give him random things here and there to get him used to things. He's tried rice, chicken, several veggies, and even a little bit of cupcake (without the frosting).

Not ridiculous at all! I was probably the same way. Totally excited at first to do the BLW then nervous about everything. I kind of stopped until around 10 months then tried again. I tried not to worry cause she was nursing like crazy.

E is 9.5 months old and JUST starting to figure out that food goes in her mouth, she chomps, and swallows. It took some serious time and it stressed me out because solids made her throw up. And yes, E pockets food, too. We always check her before we let her out of her high chair, or i offer water to help wash down what she's stuck into her chipmunk cheeks.

Yes it is totally stressful! And don't worry about skipping a day here or there. It isn't necessary and it is hard to fit it into a schedule of bottle/nurse. We didn't really do solids every day three meals a day until he was like, nine months possibly older. I just did it when I could get a break in the nursing schedule.

Baby is 7.5 months old and we started some version of BLW, combined with cereals and feeding him from our fingers right around 6 months. At first I was excited, and his grasp is getting better, but the stress of planning meals, worries about choking/allergies, mess, added time, worries about nursing/mealtime etc. are getting to us!

Should I not worry no matter how big bites he takes? (he has no teeth)

Does he need to be offered 3 meals a day, or does 1 or 2 suffice?

At this age, is it ok to skip solids some days? When will that not be an option?

What about when he takes bites but neither swallows nor spits the food out? Today I found a chunk of apple in his mouth and worried.

Can babies be mum mum addicts?

Even as I write this, I know I sound a little ridiculous, but life was so easy when nursing fulfilled all his needs! I just need some reassurance/advice/commiseration.
