We have a yellow lab, and I swear I had a love/hate relationship with him for the first 6 months. He chewed up everything we owned, had poop explosions in his kennel, dug up the yard, you name it. And one day something clicked and he is a complete angel now. He is an amazing dog and I'm so glad we hung in there with him! We just gave him lots of love and consistent training, and we all survived :)

@MrsBrewer: Awh I totally know what you are going through! Our Golden Retriever was the WORST puppy ever. I spent most of her first year of life crying, swearing, and/or threatening to get rid of her. She ate a stuffed animal and needed a $5K surgery. She chewed on our brand new walls. She destroyed every single bed we gave her. She's eaten towels. She digs through the garbage. She was the WORST to potty train and peed/pooped in her crate AT LEAST once a week for about five months straight.

Fast forward to 2.5 years later. She's an amazingly sweet, kind, gentle dog. Yeah, sometimes she still causes trouble - the other day I caught her eating a cookie off the counter - but I'd say 99% of the time, she's a lovely dog and she's so patient/gentle w/LO. Hang in there - I'm sure your dog will get better w/age, too :)

I have had 3 dogs now as an adult. My 11 year old black lab was so bad as a puppy and an older dog!! She ate anything she could get her mouth on. My neices are still trained to hold food up in the air, and not let her near puzzles, crayons and anything little! We had a yellow lab/husky who was nuts! she would chew anything she could! She was super loving and sweet but crazy!! We could not trust her for half a second and were always with her. Our 7 month old boxer/shepeard is hyper, and drives us crazy but clicker training and dog puzzles have been our life saver! we call the puzzles and toys you can put the treats in the baby sitter! We went to the pet store, bought 4 different types of toys, and a few types of very yummy high value (to her not cost) treats, and we will stuff them in, or stuff peanut butter in and freeze them. THis has helped big time as she can spend her energy on the toys trying to get it out (work out her brain which gets the energy out instead of having to work out the body!) Best advice the trainer has given us! She just passed level 1 clicker training last night, and we will be starting level 2 in a few weeks!

@MrsBrewer: My dog was a nightmare! She peed everywhere! tore up our carpet, scratched our doors, ate our sheets, 5 cell phones, 4 pares of glasses, countless blinds, 2 pet taxi's, seat belt in my car... the list goes on. Come to find out it was separation anxiety. The older she got the better it was. It helped that I was able to take her to work with me for a couple years. She was able to get out more and be more active so it helped her calm while she was alone. She is seriously the best dog ever & is now a 10 year old certified Hospice Dog.

Look into dog training classes. It was a life saver! Even the basic sit, heel, stay type of classes can help with obedience and boredom.

@MrsBrewer: sure thing! Ours is chocolate, too :). Seriously, she is the sweetest dog ever, but I wanted to pull my hair out for the first 6 or so months. Labs respond REALLY well to clicker training. They're also really smart dogs. We can train ours to do any basic thing now, without the clicker, just by reinforcing the behavior with treats. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have!

@MrsBrewer: Puppies are so. much. work. !! But seriously, our dog chewed everything, got into the garbage, and constantly nipped at everyone's ankles. I was in 4th grade I think and I remember putting "a muzzle for our dog" on my Christmas list. He grew up, got neutered, and mellowed out and was the sweetest, most patient adult dog you'd ever met. When we'd board him at the vet, the vet would let him just follow him around all day because he was so friendly. I was pretty little but I know regular walks and Kong dog toys helped him destress and distract :)

@MrsBrewer: I haven't read your other threads either, so not sure what kind of dog it is or how old. But here's my experience:

We got a lab puppy a couple years ago. She was so much work! Had to take her out in the middle of the night, always had to keep an eye on her to make sure she didn't pee/poo inside or chew on things she wasn't supposed to. We made sure we were ALWAYS with her--she was never alone. We also clicker trained, which worked like a charm. You can get books or look up how-tos online. It helps if the dog likes food a lot so they're motivated to perform for rewards.

Fast forward 2 years, and she is a wonderful dog! She NEVER chews on anything she isn't supposed to, and she's a really well-behaved dog. I really questioned the decision to get her in the beginning, but now I can't imagine her not being a part of our family.

Sorry for the long post! I have no idea if this is helpful for you or not...

@MrsBrewer: our dog was a total terror as a pup. He chewed up baseboards, ripped up a bunch of carpet, and chewed up the legs of our dining table. And I'm probably forgetting some stuff! Anyways he's an awesome dog now!!! Hang in there!

You ladies know how much I have been struggling with our puppy/dog lately. Well it got to a new all time low.

Today I let him in our backyard for 5 minutes, we regularly let him out there for 30-60 minutes at a time. Well this time.....he tore all the pipes and cords off our a/c unit! Wtf! Seriously?!?

It was old anyways, but we just don't have the means to replace it yet.....but it looks like we have to spend the little bit that we did have in our saving to get it fixed. I'm a crying slobbering mess right now. I just don't know what to do.....I'm just sooooo upset
