One of DH's little brothers was named after one of their dogs growing up lol... & then his little sister's middle name came from another of their dogs. Some friends of ours named their dog Luke and I really like it for a boys name. Not sure how DH feels about it tho ... I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there :)

I would try to not let it bother me but I know it would, I would probably try and look for another name personally, but if you love it go for it and use it!

I'd probably still use the name and then tell the baby that she was named after her Auntie, the dog. But I'm weird like that!

My husband has actually been trying to convince me to re-name our dog (Charlie) because that's his favorite name and we wasted it on our dog. He thinks she (the dog) won't care what her name is as long as we keep throwing her frisbees. I think I'd feel bad about it though!

I really liked Lily for a girl's name, but my BFF's dog's name is Lily. Dh didn't care and I warmed up to beign okay with it.

We're having a boy, so it's a non-issue now.

I'm really weird but it would ruin the name for me. I also, though, avoided any names of anybody we know, no matter how well we know them, past or present. So take me with a grain of salt.

@Maysprout: For some reason this reminds me of The Office when Pam named their baby Phillip after her grandfather and Angela named her baby Phillip after her favorite cat lol.

People have told us we wasted a perfectly good baby name on one of our dogs. I hope one of our friends doesn't not use it though because of us, though I understand how it kinda stinks to then feel like you're naming the baby after a dog. But people who meet LO won't think of it that way.

@PawPrints: :-) Definitely need to remember this when the time comes. It is silly to have restrictions on your own child's name!

I've said this on a different thread about using names that your friends have already used to name their kids: just pick the name you like! I feel like we get stuck in a frame of reference imagining our baby's first few months, maybe first few years, and we think of it as awkward to have the same name as another kid or, certainly, the same name as a dog. But from your kid's perspective, they're going to have that name for decades and decades! Way longer than anybody will remember that dog or even that other kid. I think it's really a shame to fall back to a second-choice name over something that, more than likely, your kid isn't ever going to be aware of. He or she should have the name you want them to have.

Oh i'd still use it, if you both love it! When I was 16 I "named" my SUV Jack, and now if I have a son my #1 pick is Jack, DH thinks it's weird but I don't lol

I would still use it. I always say I was named after our dog. My name is Nicole and my parents had a dog named Nicky. They really liked Nicole but almost didn't use I because of the dog. Eventually they decided It was the name they liked and they figured I would out live the dog so I got my name. They never called me Nicky though. My family calls me coley.

@marriedandlovingit: Right now the name seems like it was made for Mia the pug! I think I might be able to get over it and laugh about it later! Do I have to ask "permission" to use the same name?! Lol!

That is tough bc you know them personally and see them often! Two weeks before our lo was born, we were at the dog park and met a dog with the same name we named our son (Cooper!). My husband and I thought it was hilarious! It didn't stop us. Do you think in time you'll be able to not see it as a big deal? Maybe in time you all will find it cute and funny? If you and your hubby are set on the name, then I would go for it.

Aww that sucks! Personally I would still use it.... but I understand why you wouldn't want to. My friend has a dog with the same name as her sister. It was her husband's before they met, and she calls him pup because it's too weird. Not exactly the same thing....

Our good friend just got a new puppy and she is gorgeous! But he gave her a name that we both love...our #1 name for any future daughter. (We have never talked about names with this friend!)

DH says he has no problem using this name for any future LOs but I'm over it! Our friend lives 5 minutes away and we see him 3-4 times a month!
