Depending on how big your dog is, we took one bar out of our gate for our cat to go through. (He's not much of a jumper). Otherwise we just had to tell LO to stay away from the food and she stopped after a few times.

We do the same as @mediagirl: and @Mrs Green Grass: I leave it down until the first time LO messes with it in the morning so I can correct her and then I put it up on the table. I bring it down during nap times or if the dogs go outside I put it outside with them and then down again when LO goes to bed.

We keep it in the counter and just put it down every once in awhile. He's finally starting to listen when we say no, but just barely.

We were lucky because it was warm weather so we put the bowl outside. By the time we brought it in, our son wasn't AS interested. He still has his moments, but we redirect ("that's for the dog, lets play over here") and let him do water play in a kitchen bowl.

Same with @babyboecksmom, we repeatedly told her not to touch the food/water bowls. Although LO learned to crawl because she was going after the water bowl so we would move it around the living room, and she would crawl towards it! Maybe you could set up another water bowl to distract her in the meantime?

We just had to keep telling her to leave it alone, and move her away from it. It became a game for her.

For those of you with dogs and mobile babies, how do you manage the food/water set-up. DD goes straight for our dog's water bowl every time I put her down. I'd like to gate the kitchen, but then our dog wouldn't always have access to water. Are there pet-friendly baby gates?
