@Cole: Well that's good that your doggy daycare is taking precautions and closing down for cleaning!

Yea the energy really is the hardest part! Our vet told us that we can give our dog Benedryl to calm him down a bit. We gave him 3 last night (he's 85 lbs) and he slept pretty well, just woke us up at 3AM coughing, but then got a drink, and went back to sleep.

@pelikila: Oooh I love that idea! He stinks at going from down to sit too so it will be good practice!

@MrsBrewer: Poor pup (and poor you!) I wonder too, our doggy daycare, which is truly a great place, just closed for a week for deep cleaning and changing around the equipment so my husband is guessing they were having too many episodes of it. It is no fun, but at this point the worst part is all of the energy.

No suggestions for tricks, but wow I could have written this post! My dog has kennel cough right now too! We bring him to the dog park everyday, but same as you, now he's stuck at home until he's finished with his antibiotics.

I wonder if kennel cough is just going around?!

I still make my dogs do puppy pushups from their puppy manner class. They go from sit to down to sit to down to sit to down. Just hold the treat and give the hand command for sit, then switch it to down, then sit, then down, etc. They get the treat after a few and you slowly stretch it out between treats. I usually sit close to them rather than stand so they are motivated by the smell of the treat.

My super energetic dog has kennel cough and can't go to doggy day care or the dog park for another 5 days at least. I need something to wear him out a little so teaching him new tricks seems like the best choice (since the other option is going for a ten mile walk in 35 degree weather.)

He can do a handful of tricks already: roll over, dance, wipe your paws, high five, go to bed, shake, hide and seek/find it, the shell game, climb and the usual helpful commands.

We have tried teaching him to "beg" or do a circle and I think beg is uncomfortable for him and as soon as you have a treat in your hand he sits so getting him to stand up and chase the treat doesn't work (and I suppose I don't really want it to!)

What other fun things can I teach him? Suggestions on how to do it?
