You can rent a steam cleaner. We had a chronic carpet pee-er and invested in one, which removed our stains and smells. Use a pet floor cleaner for the smell. Until you get your steam cleaner, rent one.

@Tanjowen: our main floor is tile and pergo, the only carpet we have is upstairs. Of course, she seeks out carpet. I also just found a spot on our oriental rug. I'm not touching the oriental rug because we have a protection plan on that (totally worth the extra cost - it seemed like for a while our cat was throwing up on the rug every month - so frustrating). I just put vinegar and water on it. We'll see what happens. If that doesn't work I'm going to go get the Nature's Miracle.

@JMOM: White vinegar helps a lot! We used to put warm water on the spot and then rub in a little bit of Dawn dishsoap and scrub. Then we soak a towel in white vinegar and scrub/press and then vacuum over the spot for a bit.

And then we gave up and put in Pergo laminate wood floors :P

Urine B Gone! It's sooo easy to use - all you have to do is spray it all over the stain and let it dry - no scrubbing or anything and it totally gets rid of the smell. We used it constantly when our very old dog was losing control of her bladder and it worked amazingly well.

@BabyBoecksMom: @Anya: Great, thanks for the tip. I'll stop by the pet store today to see if they have it.

@Synchronicity: I saw something online about that, I may try that, too. I can't even stand to walk in my daughter's room.

My mom used to use white vinegar on her light coloured carpet and that seemed to help with any residual odour.

Is there a pet store nearby? Petsmart carries Nature's Miracle and did wonders to save our carpet from the smell and stains (works great on vomit and poop, too!)

What is the best way to get dog urine out of carpet? I soaked it up as much as I could and then used Spot Shot, but the room smells like ammonia now and there is still a very recognizable stain (we have light carpet). We have a carpet cleaner coming in a week and a half, but I'd like to get it cleaned up as much as possible because it is in my daughters room and it reeks!
