So you haven't had blood work done yet? That is an awfully big Dr. Google diagnosis to jump to.

I would request them to do bloodwork before thinking that this is it, well worth the peace of mind. If that were a true diagnosis, you would want to start treatment as soon as possible and not wait it out.

@Cole: Have you had your pup tested yet? Our dog tested positive but with her pre-existing issues we never really noticed any change in her mobility. We did the course of anti-biotics too and it's been a non-issue for us.

My dog had Lyme disease. They can typically test for it pretty easily (sometimes as part of the quick snap test done for heart worm). Once we got a positive test, he was treated with a course of antibiotics. It doesn't fully get rid of the disease, but I think it helps with the symptoms or something. It did not appear to be as big of a deal for him as it is for people, though I don't know if he just had a milder case or some. He was probably 5 or 6 at diagnosis (we had just gotten him), and lived a long, happy, life until we had to put him down for unrelated problems (cancer) at age 13. The Lyme disease didn't seem to cause many issues once treated, and we just made sure to keep him on a good flea/tick preventative.

I don't have any experience with Lyme disease in dogs, although I did find a tick on MYSELF last year (I assume it came in on one of the dogs). Gross! Anyway, I hope your vet is able to run some tests and figure out what it is/how to treat it. I'm thinking good thoughts for your little guy!

My last dog had Lyme's disease. We found out b/c it became a standard test they run here in VA. It's very common. Looking back, I could see the signs--she didn't want to jump in the car one day, and one day stopped mid-chase when going for the ball (really unusual). A little lower on the energy, but nothing really stood out. I read that many dogs never show signs. She was on meds to clear it up, but I was told she would probably always test positive for it in the future. But it's not as devastating for dogs as it is for humans.

I would definitely ask them to pull some blood and run tests. It doesn't make sense to me that it would be a muscle or ligament issue with the way it has been shifting legs, but a vet I am not! And while you want your pup to be pain free, the danger of meds like that is 1) they may hurt themselves more b/c they feel fine, but there is a problem, and 2) it masks whatever is going on. I hate giving meds without knowing the reason for the problem (I've done it though for my dogs in the past).

I'll check back for an update. I'm glad you can go to the vet again today!

Not really baby related at all but you guys are such a wealth of information I am hoping someone might be able to help.

We have been trying to figure out what is going on with our dog, starting about 10 days ago he started limping but the side kept changing, then it graduated to both hind legs but it isn't always, sometimes he seems fine or at least much better. We have taken him to the vet who did x-rays etc and prescribed pain medication (which helped immensely) and decided it must be a muscle or ligament issue and just wait it out. In the mean time the poor little guy (he is a 40 pound mix of border collie and ???) is having a hard time jumping into bed, he has fallen down the stairs (only the first three) and is just not quite himself.

So-- I googled lyme disease in dogs last night and it seems like it could be a match but it sort of looks like if it got to this point there isn't much they can do. Does anyone have any experience with this? We will take him in again today but I am really worried!

Thanks!
