We still use Frontline on our dog (she's 130# so we can't use a combo pill as none go up to that weight that we've found). I have DH apply it and avoid touching the spot while wet, if I accidentally touch it then I immediately wash my hands. I'm 31w pregnant and did the same thing when pregnant with DD (DD was perfectly healthy), the risk is only when the medication is wet and if you ingest it.

We still give our pup her Frontline, I just don't administer it to her. Ticks are too bad in our area not to give it, and my vet didn't seem to be too worried of me being in contact with the meds when I asked.

@JerricaBenton: OK, I feel stupid, I was wrong! I mentioned this conversation to my husband and he stared at me blankly. "It doesn't protect against ticks." Then he took out the box and showed me.

Whoops! Sorry for the misinformation! I don't know why I thought that. It just protects against fleas, hook/round/whipworms and heartworm. :(

@JerricaBenton: I think it's fairly new compared with everything else, but we've had her on it for about a year and a half, I think? It was new when we started her on it, though.

@ladyfingers: What?! The vet pharmacist said there was no such thing! That's awesome - thanks! We'll ask at our next appointment!

@JerricaBenton: There is now an oral that has tick protection! We give it to our dog, I think it's called Trifexis. It works great for her.

ETA: It prevents against all three -- fleas, ticks, heartworm.

Also, for what it's worth, our vet just gave birth a few months ago and she said she and her husband continued with the topical treatment through her pregnancy.

We're in the same situation. We switched to the heartworm pill with added flea protection but we have stopped the topical medication for the time being. He's basically only unprotected from ticks. He has a short coat and he's not a real outdoor-loving dog so we are just going to check for ticks after he goes out. Our vet said we could keep giving it to him, just make sure my husband applies it and that I don't touch him 'til it dries, but our dog sleeps in our bed and we don't keep him off the furniture so, we decided the best thing for us was to stop the topical stuff for now.

I'm sure youre fine. Wash your hands often. When we had LO we switched to a pill flea med so it's safer for her too

Hi all! I am excited to share that I am about 5 weeks pregnant with our first child.

BUT .... I really had no idea how much I would worry already about everything. Yesterday my dog was due for Advantix flea/tick topical preventative. I had my husband apply the medicine and I was careful not to touch the wet spots, but I have pet the dog on his head, etc. a bit since then.

Now I am freaking out and wondering if it is safe to be around the dog at all since the medicine gets absorbed into his body and is effective for a full month.

I don't go back to my ob for another week and a half so in the meantime, does anyone know anything about this? I feel so bad ignoring the dog and shutting him out of my room.
