@mediagirl: We probably could try, since they already have certain spots they prefer. Maybe a combination approach: try to persuade them to focus on peeing/pooping only in specific spots, get better about picking up after them immediately, and also build a little corral for DD. I'm thinking I'll try something simple/temporary to start, like the landscape fabric stretched across tomato stakes, just to give the dogs the idea that they need to stay away from that area. Maybe put down something soft/durable inside so she isn't just scooting on the mulch. (We can't grow grass - the dog pee kills it every year we've tried.) (Though if we had it gated off, maybe it could work.....)

Our current setup sounds like it wouldn't work for you. We were able to fence in the front yard, and LO has free access to the entire backyard.

In our old house we were trying to get grass seed to grow at one point, so we temporarily fenced off that corner of the yard. It was basically this:

http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-14713G/Traffic-Safety/Safety-Fence-4-x-100-Green

and these:

http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-4637/Traffic-Safety/Safety-Fence-Post

DH got some used ones off of Craigslist.

Hmm, I haven't thought about this but it's good idea to start thinking. Babies aren't crawling yet but I do want to go outside with them soon.

I think I will set up some fencing to keep the dogs out of a particular spot. I do have play yard that I think is raised so it would go above the poop. *shutter* Scratch that. I'll put the play yard on the cement walkway until I feel the grass the 'clean' enough.

@mediagirl: Fenced in but they don't hang out back there at all if that's what you mean? They run out and run back in. The issue is the dogs are big and the yard is tiny so even if we pick up every poop immediately, the ratio overwhelms the yard so pretty much everywhere is likely to have some residue.

We just pick up after she poos. I'm guessing you're fenced in and the yard is their home? We pretty much taught our dog to pee in the mulch or in the woods and poop in the woods, if possible. If she doesn't, we pick it up.

DD is 15 mo and we finally had been out in the backyard a couple times over the last few weeks. She doesn't really seem interested in putting anything in her mouth!

Last summer when she was 6-9 months I just put big picnic blankets out so she never really got out on the grass either.

We just try to pick up poop daily once we go out there daily! My dog usually poops in the same areas so it's not too hard to look.

We hardly ever go in our backyard to play because it is on a slope, but I never ever worry about the pee. My dog is a city dog and likes to go on walks she only poops back there if she is sick or has no choice, but will usually hold it to her next walk. We use our front/side yard more because they are bigger and flat.

Confining the baby is probably better than the dogs, at this stage! We got our puppy right after our son started walking so we didn't deal with crawling. I never worried about him touching/picking up poop as he isn't too bad about putting stuff in his mouth, but we do have a backyard/outside pair of shoes in case he steps in it (which has happened, but not often). He mostly plays with his water table on our small patio (the rest of our backyard is dirt)

How could I forget... He just picked up a oldish poop this week! I had my eye on one in the corner of the yard and was steering baby clear of it but I didn't realize there was one right there next to us! Milestone ladies! The next day he put his first piece of dog kibble in his mouth.

We were just talking about this! I want to make a toddler only area. The dogs love roaming out there and especially since they don't get as much attention these days (dog mom guilt for sure) I could take that away from them. Our yard is super un toddler friendly... Potential poop and pee, husband had his motorcycle work area which DS makes a beeline for every time we go out there, just every pot and plant about to be destroyed. I picture a cute little area with his toys and his baby pool where I can sit and just watch him, not follow him around and worry about his every move!

@regberadaisy: What, and like have to put on PANTS in the morning?? (Seriously having a fenced backyard so we would never have to put on leashes and walk outside at the crack of dawn was like... at least a moderate consideration when we bought our house.)

@LindsayLou: Wow that is serious dedication. I don't think we are going to be pouring any cement. Still curious if anyone has specific ideas for setting up less-intense fencing setups; maybe landscape fabric stretched across some tomato stakes?

@Mae: Probably the best solution. We are much better about that in the summer, and usually pick up every poop pretty soon afterward. It tends to build up in the winter when it's dark and soggy and we just don't want to follow them back there.

I have a boy dog so he only pees ON things (primarily our AC unit.... lol). So I don't feel like there is a ton of pee just all over the yard. Poop is another story. He has a lead so he can only get to certain parts of the yard and last year when LO was 1 it was easy to keep her on the other side. This year I think we're just going to have to get our butts outside and pick the poop up as soon as he is done every time to make sure we have a poop free yard for her to roam in.

@PawPrints: If they're not running around bSck there then why not just throw a leash on them and take them up front? That's what we do every time our pup has to go. We take her out front. When we're hanging in the backyard she will sometimes go back there but it's more one offs and much easier to manage!

We don't have dogs, but previous owners of our house did. They put up a chain link fence to split the backyard in two, creating a dog space. We kept the fence up since it's cemented in, and are using the larger part of the yard as lawn space, and the smaller part as a garden with raised beds and a small patio table and chairs.

@Mrs. Champagne: Our yard is tiny, so with two big dogs, chances are that any patch of grass/mulch has at least some recent pee or poop on it. Sometimes it's quite concentrated. Gross.

We are also fortunate to live near a lot of great parks so we'll likely spend tons of time there this summer, but it would be nice to let LO scoot around when we do hang out in the backyard. There may be a way we can wrangle a divider back there so the dogs only pee/poop on one side of it. What did everybody use for making a divider? Chicken wire? Gates hooked together? @littlejoy ?

A dog run wouldn't be the best solution even if the yard were bigger - they don't spend any time back there hanging out, they just run back and do their business and then run back inside again. Couch potato dogs.

My son isn't crawling. Running and walking. So we just pick up the poop every time we go outside. Wash hands when we come in. Take shoes off before we come in, etc. It hasn't really been an issue if we stay on top of picking it up. Maybe I'm being naive about germs though? The yard is huge and the dogs only usually poop on one area.

We're almost headed out of our rainy season here, which means our crawling and soon-to-be-walking baby can get to finally enjoy our little backyard. But we have two big dogs who are accustomed to peeing and pooping wherever they want, and we just scoop it all up every couple of days. LO of course is going to put mulch, dirt, grass, whatever into her mouth.

What do you do to manage dogs' needs and create a safe space for baby to play in the backyard? I'm picturing that we could build a little Baby Fury Road with playard gates and some floor mat type tiles and just have that be LO's area, thus forcing the dogs to go outside that area. Any other ideas?
