We used to stop at a little general store and get a treat every Friday after school when were kids. I think having a special day of the week is a good way to handle it! Of course we would still beg to go to "the little store" a lot! :)

I did schedule it for awhile. Then DD could tell her friends in class that we would be going to X playground on Thursdays and then other people show up if they know you will be there!

Is the playground on your way home? I find it really easy to use the avoidance method, but if I have to pass by something, my son usually likes to call my attention to it.

I think scheduling it is a great idea, my son knows that we get pizza for dinner on Friday for example, and if he asks for it during the week, we "can't" have that for dinner.

I honestly just tell them it is a special treat, and we won't be getting any today. I think if you schedule it on a certain day, they will come to expect it on that day too. Better to be sporadic and let it be a pleasant surprise when you do say yes.

I think it's important for kids to experience disappointment!

We go to the playground nearly every day after daycare. When we can't do that, I always mention the toys or books waiting for him at home.

I just say exactly that "certain things (playgrounds, ice cream, etc.) are a special treat and not something that can be begged for every day" (although mine is younger than yours) and she usually is agreeable. I expect it won't fly so well when she's older.

I've been using the positive phrasing I heard about on here, something along the lines of "Oh, gosh, I WISH I could take you to the park every day. I would if I could! But we can't go everyday because of XYZ...." and that goes over a lot better than just a simple "NO" or something like that.

We go to the playground after school from time to time and it's fun for the kids. I don't mind at all, except for one thing: the kids come to expect it, and beg for it every time! Same things goes for when we get a little ice cream on the walk home - they will start begging for ice cream every day.

How do you make it clear that certain things (playgrounds, ice cream, etc.) are a special treat and not something that can be begged for every day? I was thinking about scheduling them on specific days (Ice cream on Mondays, playgrounds on Fridays), but I'd love a more flexible solution if anyone has one!
