@Skadi: sorry to hear. Have you tried anything else that boosted your supply? I'm freaking out because DD doesn't take a bottle and nursing is closely associated with sleep.

@MamaChin: Unfortunately, the site doesn't accept e-checks from my bank (a U.S. state credit union). :( I'm guessing the e-check trick probably does work...if you bank with a mainstream bank like BB&T or whatever.

Plan a vacay to Mexico! It's OTC and cheap. I took it for gastro reasons and the side effect was very welcome! I can't understand what the big deal is with the FDA in the U.S. With that vs. Reglan it just seems SO stupid!

@Skadi: it was OTC in Italy, too! I had a straight-up panic attack when I noticed the site that was recommended to me started asking for a script (they wouldn't accept my italian prescription), and since i didn't have a doctor here, I was s-o-l.

I'm sorry that my post isn't helpful, but I just want to let you know that I know where you're coming from. Luckily, we were at the point where baby-led weaning was starting to happen, so I just slowly weaned myself from the dom, and then she slowly started to wean even more since my supply tanked. But...now I'm pregnant again and REALLY worried that I'll need to use it again. Thanks for reminding me that I need to start talking about it with my OB.

I had low supply with my first and didn't find out about dom till I was about ready to wean. But i am definitely exploring it immediately if I have low supply again with #2.

@ms.janedoe: It is entirely legal, but the doc has to disclose that it is off-label. The FDA doesn't regulate how drugs are prescribed, just which ones are approved, if that makes sense. For example, some pediatricians prescribe an old-school antidepressant for bed-wetting, because it has a "side-effect" of helping that condition, even though that is obviously not what it is intended for!

My pediatrician gave me a script, primarily because I hadn't established with an OB yet. Next time, I'll ask my OB or my PCP. The lactation benefit of Domperidone is fairly well recognized, so honestly, it's lack of familiarity on the physician's part. (i.e. Some docs only use certain antibiotics, because that is what they are used to prescribing.) And I would waaaay rather take Dom than Reglan. I've seen a patient with tardive dyskinesia from haldol and it isn't reversible. I had to have Domperidone too, but realize it costs about $130/month from a compounding pharmacy. It's not cheap!

@Skadi: I am SO sorry. :( Reglan didn't even work for me because it didn't address my underlying issues. I would try talking to your doctor again, and check around if there are any LCs or nursing groups that can recommend physicians who might be willing to prescribe. This just seems really unfortunate to me.

@Espion: Maybe I worded it wrong, I know off label stuff can be used in other circumstances, but in regards to Dom, unless you have a gastric reason for it, no doctor in the US can prescribe it for lactation purposes (and I know nothing about compounding pharmacies so I'm not speaking to that).

If I'm totally wrong, I'd love to find out who/where will write a script 'cause I'd be willing to look back into getting on it!

@ms.janedoe: Yes, they can. I use off label medications for kids all the time.

@Charm54: It's not FDA approved because in the IV form, it can cause heart problems. This hasn't been shown in the oral form.

@Skadi: I would talk to your doctor in person (i.e. not through a nurse) and say, "I have been using Domperidone for XX weeks, and the side effect risks of Reglan (tardive dyskinesia) are far greater." You can also ask your LO's pediatrician, and finally, call the lactation consultants at your hospital and see what they say. They may have a nurse practitioner willing to write the script for you. Many hospitals have "lactation boutiques" you can call for support.

Pretty sure a doctor absolutely cannot legally prescribe Dom for lactation (which would be "off-label")--only for gastro reasons.

@Skadi: this topic just came up at my weekly nursing group. one of the mamas is taking dom and needed a refill, but ran into the same problem of needing a script to re-order. one of the other mamas in the group recently purchased a refill (after being told she needed a script) and said if you pay by e-check you don't need a script. not sure how accurate that is, just wanted to pass it along to see if that is an option you've tried!

I was taking 90 mg of Dom, ordered online since I'm in the US. It wasn't until I ran out that I realized you can't get it now without a prescription. :crying: I called my OB to see if she would write it, but she's wary of it not being FDA approved. Now my supply has completely tanked--I'm getting 10 ounces per day, tops.

Is there any way to get it without a scrip? I'm afraid to take raglan because of the side effects. My drop in supply has me in tears...and to think, if I was in Australia, I could get more domperidone over the counter!

I've tried herbal supplements, etc. but so far they don't seem to be helping. I desperately want my medicine back.
