I donated my hair 6 weeks after having DS. I'm kind of sad to read about LoL. I always assumed they were giving the wigs to patients for free. Anyway, happy to see that there is another alternative!

I cut my hair today. Going to donate it to Pantene. :)

Did you know Pantene has a 5% or less grey hair requirement? I was a little worried about that b/c my family tends to grey very young but DH said my hair is not at 5% yet. :)

The min requirement is 8 inches but there is no max. I'm donating 14 inches.

He got his wig a long time ago - maybe 18 years? He doesn't even wear it these days. But I know it really helped him to have it when he first lost his hair.

@sarac: Sorry I missed your post earlier! I was just re-reading comments now. I'm really happy to hear a good LoL story! How long ago did your brother in law get the wig? I feel like things have changed a lot over the years from what I read about LoL now. :)

@zippylef: Thanks for the tip! :)

Did I mention how lazy I am? My hair is super virgin. Never colored, never treated, *almost* never blow dried (when I get my hair down for weddings - that I'm a part of - it is kind of heated a bunch). I wash it every 3 days or so.

I normally have it a pony tail (when it's reasonably short) or in a bun (when it's long). :)

Hopefully my hair is a good fit to sale!

Also I mentioned I was lazy? I might even bother selling it if I find it too troublesome but this was a very interesting thing to learn none the less. :)

@Raindrop: Selling depends on length and hair condition. People dont buy chemically treated hair for very much.

I've donated two times to Beautiful Lengths. Depending on the quality of your hair, you could sell it and donate the money to a charity if you have another cause that is close to your heart.

@Ginger333: When I was in college is when I started doing this. The reason I sent it to LoL the first 2 times was because in my college town a hair salon cut your hair for free if you donate it. They sent it to LoL and all I had to do was fill out a donation card with my name and address so LoL could send a thank you note.

I didn't think much of it. When I moved, my area doesn't do free hair cuts with donation (or LoL stop offering the program, I'm not sure) and so I just cut it at home and went to a hair dresser to get my hair "fixed" and mailed it off on my own.

Now that I'm ready to donate again when I looked up LoL this time... some negative stories came up with them and that's why I'm looking for a new place to donate. :)

I'm not a fan of LoL either. My friend contacted them when she needed to get a wig for her daughter who lost all of her hair as a result of a health condition not related to cancer, and they not only refused to consider her but were quite rude about it too.

I agree with @zippylef: I am not fond of how LoL sells so much of the hair they get. I've heard good things about Beautiful Lengths, but have not donated there myself.

I refuse to donate to LoL due to how much they turn around and sell the hair they receive. They also charge families for the wigs. Shady business.

I'd do Pantene Beautiful Lengths. They give FREE wigs to women with cancer.

I normally donate my hair to Locks of Love.

I was just wondering if other people donated their hair to anywhere else. If so where? :)

BTW: I don’t donate my hair purely out of the goodness of my heart. I’m actually super lazy to cut my hair on a normal basis and after about 2-3 years my hair gets unmanageably long and I have to cut it. When this first happened I looked at my hair and thought hey this looks long enough to donate and I measured it and it was! So braided before cutting it off and donated it. I have been doing it ever since. I have donated about 4 times and now I’m up for a donation *hair getting unmanageably long*. Since I have donated to Locks of Love all 4 times I was wondering if somewhere else might needed it. I haven’t cut my hair yet.
