@mrs. wagon: this happen to my LO too. Do you remember what brand it the trash can was? she didn't have socks on and it just about chopped the toe off and broke tip of her toe off. Ours was a simple human trash can. This seems to be a quite common thing that I never even had thought of as a potential danger

@Thehistoryofus: he was playing with the trashcan... he has pulled up the top before to throw things away, but he'd never put his foot on the pedal before. Wagon Sr. was fixing his dinner (I was in the other room) when Wagon Jr. started screaming... his little foot was stuck deep where the step meets the can, in that little joint.

@banana: we looked up what the doctor would do and they said all they can really do is tape up the toe, so we just tried to figure out as much as possible whether it was swollen, bruised, and whether he could move it and put weight on it. Thankfully by the time we put him to bed (about an hour later) it wasn't swollen or bruised at all. I would recommend getting the step can away where LO can't reach it!!

@artbee: ooh, a foot doctor nearby would be soooo helpful, sighhh!!!

@MamaMoose: thank youuuu :)

Poor little buddy!!! But it definitely sounds like this was harder on mommy and daddy than Wagon Jr. He's a tough little dude and he'll be just fine!!

Oh no!!!! Poor Wagon JR!!! Hope he's not in too much pain. :( We have a step trashcan too and we always let our son play with it. I'll have to make sure to move it now. His toe doesn't sound broken. Are you getting him xrayed?

So Wagon Jr. is passed out now, but Wagon Sr. and I are so emotionally exhausted. We were so worried and stressed and the fact that this was such an avoidable injury makes us so mad and frustrated. We're throwing away the trashcan tonight. Ugh.

Ugh.

Anyway, all is well... after his bath we changed his band-aid and the toe is not swollen or bruised at all, so we're pretty sure it's just the two wounds. They're pretty big wounds though (the skin on the bottom of his toe is completely skinned off, but still attached... the skin on the top of his toe is clipped off, right above the nail) so they must sting like hell. My poor baby. He went to bed ok but he was whining and picking at the band-aid for a good 15 minutes and we were both miserably staring at him through the monitor.

We both have to remind ourselves (and each other) that there are much, much worse injuries happening to kids right now... we're just overreacting and he's going to injure himself all the time.

Sigh!

Thanks ladies... ugh! We have this big bandage over it so we can't tell if it's swelling or not. He keeps breaking out into little cries but we can't tell if it's because of the wounds or because it's broken. I asked him to wiggle his toes, and he wiggled them a little, but not a lot. He's too scared to walk on it or wiggle his toes. Ughhh!!

Wagon Jr. just got his foot stuck in the step of the metal trashcan we have in the kitchen, and even with socks on, the skin on both the front and back of his fourth toe got ripped off. Really tricky wound to bandage. We're worried that his toe is broken. Ugh.
