@travelgirl1: The bebe au lait covers with a stiff neck are great for this. You can see in without using your hands.

I agree that breastfeeding is normal, but my breast is still a private part of my body that I wouldnt normally expose and if there are moments when my nipples might show I would definitely want a cover. Maybe you can use a cover until you have the shield on and then remove the cover?

I dont cover up. I dont use a nipple shield. I wear a cardigan so when I have to lift up my shirt my back does not get cold. If you're not comfortable using a cover don't use it.

I actually think a nipple shield makes using a cover harder..... you want to see exactly where nipple is, shield is and baby is and hiding beneath all that fabric is a bit of a stressor sometimes. You should do what YOU are comfortable with. Don't worry about other people (unless you're in their home, then I think you should do whatever makes them comfortable), just do what you feel best with.

I'm not exactly sure what a nipple shield requires, but it sounds like a cover might be the way to go.

I am all for nursing in public without a cover, but I think nursing with a baby latched on and seeing a little side boob is different then an actual nipple out there. I mean, don't get me wrong you wouldn't offend me or anything, but I could see how some people might.

In the end this is 100% your decision. Do what you are comfortable with. Plus, you may not have to use a shield forever.

I don't cover because I'm ashamed...I would just feel uncomfortable otherwise. I definitely think a nipple shield makes things a lot more complicated!

I'm exactly like you, I believe breastfeeding is normal and not immodest and should be commonplace. But here's the thing - if you want to wear a cover, you should. If you don't want to cover, you shouldn't.

To me, being "shamed" into covering is a result of bowing to pressures around you. If you are doing it for your own comfort, it has nothing to do with shame.

I think covers are just for your own modesty. You could use a cover until you get him latched and then take it off.

I don't think you should view using a cover as being ashamed to feed him. We use a sheild and a cover. Your nip definitely gets more exposure when you are using a sheild so the cover helps me feel more comfortable while I get her situated.

So I've always been anti cover. I think breastfeeding is normal and not immodest and should be commonplace. But we are stuck on using a nipple shield, and it involves me hanging out bare a lot more than it would otherwise. (Putting it on, taking it off, wiping up.) so I think I'm just going to get a cover. But I don't think I should be ashamed to feed him either.

Does anyone use a shield and no cover?
