I prefer a water closet and I think the period of needing two showers for kids is relatively short lived.

My husband actually raised the idea for when we put in a master bath, I said I don’t get it. I see it from an aesthetic cool perspective but I am totally a practical builder. Anyone have one in a master bath and love it? I suggested maybe multiple showers in the kids bathroom but that would be only if we decide to have more than 2 kids.

I would rather have a water closet for the toilet if it’s a guest bathroom. And a double sink sounds much nicer. I don’t know that I’d ever use a double shower either. Maybe if it was the master and I had space but seems kinda over the top for a bathroom not on the bedroom floor?

@Hypatia: knock down those walls girl

If the walls aren’t load bearing removing them is actually nbd. Looks like there’s no plumbing in them?

@Hypatia: haha. I'll be honest - it could be a pretty awesome bathroom with the walls gone. but, that is a lot of work, so I get the hesitation.

@NorthStar: Yep, there's currently no window, so it's quite cavernous back there. We'd put one in with privacy glass, though I'm not sure yet of the placement.

Maybe the answer is to just knock down walls and make it a nice open space. :silly:

@Hypatia: ok, that makes sense. Yeah, it's such an odd shaped room, that moving the toilet might open up some possibilities. have you looked on pinterest to see if anything looks interesting to you? I noticed that you put in a window in your remodel plans. I assume that would be added as well (there isn't one currently)?

@bhbee: Guests mostly. We don't have any Bedrooms downstairs, but it is about eight feet from our back door, so my DH thought it'd be convenient to wash down the kids after they've been playing outside. The big tub seems out of place to me, but then again, it would be nice to have a two person jecuzzi. The tub in our master is very basic, I just use it to bathe the kids right now because it's on the narrow side.

@northstar I hadn't thought of that! I'll definitely be keeping that in mind. I like the idea of the toilet being separate.

I also have this thought running through my head of putting the toilet in the closet (if that space isn't really needed). that way, more than one person can use the space if someone needs to use the toilet. but, then, that might be more work than it's worth due to moving plumbing (which might not even be possible). I think I need to understand who uses the space the most or what you see it being used for in the future.

@Hypatia: ok - sorry! for some reason, i had in my head this was the master since it had a double shower. in that case, I'm not sure a double shower would be necessary for a bathroom that isn't the master. But, I could also see where it might be beneficial. Are there any kids rooms down there (or would there be in the future)? If so, a double vanity might be nice for when they are older so that they don't have to fight over using a sink. I wasn't sure how often that space/bathroom is used.

YES to double sinks! Ours are opposite (vs side by side) and I love it, although not sure would work for your layout. I also have a seated vanity on my side (like slide a seat under the counter) and love that for getting ready.

Thanks for the ideas so far! This is the downstairs bathroom, so I wasn't sure how important a double vanity might be? We have a regular tub (is inset the term?) in our master bath, but that's it. A doubl vanity would probably be more aesthetically pleasing though.

I agree about the tub. Do you use one frequently, do you need one (aka, do you have a tub the kids could use in another bathroom)? I've found that having double sinks is SO worth it. I hate having to deal with my husband's whiskers that he shaved off or trying to both use the sink. I'd just rather have my own.

We don’t have a double but could be useful if your kids are old enough for it. We have one that is just a big square with a bench seat on one side and one shower head and I can go in there in shorts and shower both kids at once getting only a bit wet, which is great for summer. That is definitely not an easy layout!

I've never used a double shower, but my DH wants one for the downstairs bathroom we plan to eventually renovate. Do you like them? Would you use the space differently? I've attached photos of the current layout (the blank space is literally empty and weirdly unusable as is) and our tentative plan.

The whole room would be tiled in one big, open double shower (the floor plan app I used didn't have it as an option). The size of the shower room (current bathroom) is about 3.5'x8'. We figure it'll save money to keep the basic layout of the bathroom the same (we don't want to move walls, etc. unnecessarily). That's a closet on the top right.
