@muffinsmuffins: My son isn't really a fan of the scooter, but he LOVES bikes - he liked the balance bike but really loved the pedalling, so he was a maniac on his tricycle and last summer we bought him a small bike with training wheels which he now rides everywhere.

Not sure where you are in Canada but try kijiji - we got a used running stroller, had it for three years (used it twice, whoops!) and resold it for the same price. We did a similar thing with a Bassinest.

@muffinsmuffins: we have a 3.5 year gap between our kids. They are now 6 and 2.5. We got a hand me down sit and stand that we only used for taking the dog on walks (the dog didn’t join the family until the little one was 15 months) and to the park that we can walk on a trail to.

For other outings like the zoo we had the big one in the bob at the beginning and wore the baby. That was the go to plan for about a year.

Now big sister learned to bike well so we dumped the double stroller and she will bike to the park while we push the little one in the bob. At the zoo or other outings I just bring the bob and they take turns.

It depends on your big kid and what you think they will like. It was a nice option for our specific situation with the walking trail and park to have the cheap stroller but I wouldn’t spend a lot of money on it.

We're going to have a 2 year 9 month age gap between children and are getting a double BOB for walking/running around the neighborhood and thinks like the zoo/museum. Probably getting a ride along board of some sort for our older daughter when we go places like the mall.

Thanks so much everyone! I think I like the idea of getting something used and then selling it and going back to our old stroller later...I’m in Canada so our prices are ridiculous but I’ll keep checking for deals. For curiosity I checked our buy and sell and just missed out on a beat up sit and stand for under $50 :crying:

@Beehive: yes the walking stamina is an issue so that’s a good idea. We tried taking him on his trike last year but of course he gets 5 minutes down the road and wants nothing of it.

@erinbaderin: did you find your child took to the scooter easily? We tried a balance bike and it was novel but he wasn’t into it at all. He will be a year older of course this year so who knows!

@crazydoglady: ha I remember skimming your thread and being like nah we don’t need a double for sure! Now I’m second guessing as we had nice weather over the weekend and my son yet again loved going in his stroller. I keep waiting for him to suddenly be over it but hasn’t happened yet! Thinking he will be jealous to have to ‘share’ it with the baby! Checking out the Joovy Caboose right now...

We received a double as a hand me down and used it a total of 2 times. Our age gap was exactly 3 years. I found that in the newborn stages, it was far easier for me to use a carrier for DS2 when DS1 wanted to use the stroller, and then DS1 got used to walking. We also have one of those push cars, so if we ever were out as a family, DS1 would ride in the car and I would push DS2 in the stroller. But the double was a waste for us.

3.5 age gap. Lo1 was a stroller lover but learned to walk more. She took her scooter for walks. We also got a handle for stroller and she would hold it and walk alongside it.
We went to Disney world right after age 4 and she walked mostly too!

My second and third will have a two year age gap and we’re still not getting a double. It’s so big and heavy. My second also hates the stroller so I don’t even know if we will get a lot out of it. We do have a small travel stroller if we need an additional stroller.

@muffinsmuffins: We're anticipating a similar age gap (3 years 8 months), and I decided to forgo the double stroller. My son hasn't ridden in a stroller in at least a year, so I have no idea why he'd be interested a further 4 months from now. If anything, he'll insist on pushing baby sister in her stroller  . He has a scooter he likes, so I figure he can use that for neighborhood strolls. For something crazy like a trip to Disneyland (we live in Southern California), I'd look at renting a double stroller for the day, but to store a double stroller that will barely get use wasn't worth it to us. We'll see how it turns out!

@Bluemasonjar: @muffinsmuffins: @MrsBucky: Hey birth board ladies! I posted this a couple weeks ago and got some great ideas. We are going to go with the joovy ultralight with the extra seat. I like that you can use an infant car seat in it.

My kids are currently 4 and 2 and we still get a fair amount of use out of our double stroller, although it's starting to decline. For walks around the neighbourhood we don't use it, we either use the wagon (wouldn't be an option with a newborn though!) or B rides his bike. We mostly use it places with a lot of walking (the zoo) or places where we sometimes want them both restrained (the mall).

Instead of getting a double I might spend the summer working on riding a scooter or a tricycle.

@muffinsmuffins: My two are 4 years 3 months apart, and we did get a double stroller, because I couldn't imagine DS being able to walk long distances in the city (which we do regularly) - he loved being in the stroller. We ended up going on a walking vacation when DS was 4.5, and he was totally fine and happy to walk all day (with sit-downs from time to time), so we sold our double stroller a few months after we got it. Given the age of your older child, you may just want to work on walking stamina. Most of our son's friends ditched the stroller for good around age 4, even in the city. (We never got a riding board, because it seemed like it would be really annoying to push).

Our kids are 20 months apart. We got the Joovy Caboose when DS2 was 6 months old and able to sit up in a stroller seat. DS1 was 2.5 years old.

The boys are 22 months and 3.5 years old now and we still use it on the reg. We got the Caboose + the second seat attachment (its regularly just a sit and stand) because we didn't think our oldest was ready for the freedom to get on and off yet, but if the age spread was just about 4 years old, we would have skipped it.

It was $100 during Christmas sales, so really cheap, and we've been really happy with it. The extra seat attachment was $50.

Personally I don't have much use of a double (we were gifted one). We have a 2 year Gap but I always wore DD2 and DD1 usually was in a trike/wagon. We use the double just because we have it, but DD1 almost never uses the actual chair; she just uses the simple get on/get off sit/stand thing (we have Baby Trend). And now that DD2 can sit well (she'll be 15 mo) we'll probably use the wagon way more.

My son will be 3.5 when our new LO arrives, and I just can’t justify the expense. My plan is to baby wear the new one until he/she is too heavy, then get a ride on board to attach to our citi mini. But we also don’t use our stroller a ton. We will see if I regret this decision on our next trip to Munich with two kiddos- 4 years and 10 months. 😬

@muffinsmuffins: I could have written this post! Wondering the same thing with Lo #2 on the way. We don't use our stroller a ton with DS so I'm not sure a double will be worth it but might start keeping an eye out for a good used one to have the option.

We used the board with our city mini. The main issue is that it’s just heavy to push once you have the weight of a kid on there, but for short distances it is fine. Smartest thing we did was get a scooter for the older one.

Mine are 3 years apart and I got a ton of use out of the sit n stand. We also have a graco - it was close to $100 so the price was right, although it doesn’t handle as nicely as an expensive double it fit the job we needed. I’d check around for anything used too!

We have closer to a 3-year gap but we got a used double bob on Craigslist for this purpose. We do a lot of neighborhood walks with the dog, walks to a farther-away playground, to the neighborhood bakery/bottle shop, etc so we thought we’d get some good use out of a double. They hold their resale value well in my area so we should be able to sell once we are done with it.

I have a 4 and almost 2yo and they both still use the stroller A LOT. I have a side by side. My friend with the same age kiddos has a double where the older sits on the back facing backwards - her older still uses it a lot but it’s def not as comfy and if we’re all together they all fight over the side by side. We’ve also tried a rumble board but both of our orders couldn’t handle it for more then a few minutes

I can’t speak about the City Mini because I don’t have one. But my girls are 3 years apart and we got a Graco ready to grow double, and I’m so glad we did (although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that stroller) . Dd1 likes to ride on the toddler board/seat and actually, so does dd2 now that she’s older. We get way more use out of it that I anticipated so I’m glad we got one. We went to the zoo yesterday and just took the single stroller for dd2 and I regretted not having my double. For me personally, the toddler board for my almost 5 year old is clutch.

We are expecting #2 in September when DS will be nearly 4. We do a lot of walking our dog and whatnot around the neighbourhood, sometimes just one of us with both stroller and dog. DS still likes the stroller for walking and going out. We have the City Mini GT.

I see the rumble board has horrible reviews but has anyone used one on this stroller? Should we sell the City Mini and invest in a double? If you had that type of age gap, what did you do? I realize we can put baby in a carrier for a bit and DS in the stroller but holding a dog as well makes me nervous...I wish we would have thought ahead 3 years before we bought the mini!
