thanks everyone, it's so useful to read about everyone's experiences! soooo much to think about!

does anyone have or has anyone checked out the new uppababy double umbrella stroller? I'm intrigued by it since we use a g-luxe often already and like it, and this new double is supposedly just like it.

DS and DD are 22 months apart. For the first few months we would wear DD and DS would ride in the single stroller, a Maclaren Quest. After DD started walking they would trade off riding in the single. But when we would go to the zoo we would use this huge tandem double stroller we got as a hand me down. It was like pushing a small truck! Plus DD had trouble getting in by herself and would refuse to nap in it. So right before our next vacation I decided to buy a Maclaren Twin Techno off craigslist. BEST DECISION EVER. I could not imagine bringing that huge tandem stroller on vacation with us and lugging it through a busy airport. Both kids have no issues getting in/out and they sit side-by-side so no one has their view blocked in the Techno. I still wear DD, but now that she's bigger it's nice that she will also fall asleep in the Techno next to DS. We don't live in the city and we don't really bring a lot of stuff with us, so having a double umbrella stroller really fit us well.

ETA: The Maclaren Twin Techno fits through ANY regular sized door and I was surprised that it has fit through many small openings where I thought it wouldn't.

I'm pondering the same. Our kids will be three years and change apart, so I think I'm going to wait and see. I have a city mini and heard the roller board attachment for it isn't great, but that's an option. Also looking at the Joovy ultralight caboose for a sit n stand. But I think I'll wait until DS arrives and see how it goes. I hope he'll like being worn ;)

I will be having a 25 month gap (so literally just a month over 2 years). I wasn't going to get one; we barely use our stroller as is and I plan on wearing DD2 a lot. We ended up getting a hand me down double stroller anyway, which I guess is nice for when we do want to use it! Maybe go the used route? There was no way I'd spend $$ getting a fancy one. I was maaaaybe looking into the Joovy sit & stand ones.

I have a 2 year 9 month gap and we've used the double a ton in the month since DD was born. We have a City Select and DS sees us using it for DD and insists on riding in it too. If he didn't, we'd use it a lot less. We also have a baby that gets over tired and sleeps in the car (then stays asleep for a few hours), so we've been going out a lot.

I have a 4year age gap and I bought one. 1. I bought is used double, so I saved about $150 2. I have plenty of space to store it. I walk my 4yo to school most of the year, and even before DD2, I took a stroller for the stuff and in case she wanted to ride, -and for crossing the one major intersection. The double will allow her to sit or stand. I debated long and hard, but when I found the used one I wanted, I just went for it.

There is a 2.5 year age gap between our first and second.

We use our double all the time. It probably depends on the child, but DS1 would never walk all the time, not even in the mall.

I would start with just the buggy board and a good baby carrier. Mine are 2.5 years apart and I did get the rumble seat for my vista, and we did use it a lot walking in the city, but having the older one in the front seat makes it hard to steer and takes up a ton of space. I took it on the train I think once like that.

One thing I love with UB strollers is its so easy to switch things around. To make it easier on myself, I stopped buckling the toddler in, so now I can effortlessly switch between toddler or baby in the primary seat- the straps are just always adjusted for the baby. I didn't get the buggy board but wish I did. With the buggy board on your Cruz and a baby carrier it will be so easy to switch based on both LOs moods.

My kids are exactly 3 years apart and we did not get a double. A big reason was because we really had no where to store it--our UB vista was taking up a lot of space as it was. We did not get the rumble seat either, as I think you can't use it with the bassinet, and my LO would have been almost too big for it when baby was born, plus I heard it made it more awkward to push. We did get the ride on board and that was awesome--we used that a TON walking around the city. I also didn't baby wear as much as Ithought I would since LO2 always cried if I tried to do very much with her in the carrier. So LO1 was pretty much just on the ride on board. Or occasionally in the umbrella with LO2 in the carrier.

I will say that this depends on your kid. I was super nervous about LO1 not being strapped down somewhere or running off, and I think if they had been 2.5 years apart instead, we would have had to get a double. But by 3, LO1 was a really good listener and we didn't have many issues with not listening about being on the board.

I will also say that now, he is almost 4, and his favorite thing is to sit in the basket, so our single UB has become a double :)

My kids are 27 months apart. Before DS 2 came, we worked really hard with DS1 to get him used to walking and out of the stroller (he kind of hated the stroller anyway). We still got a double stroller and we've used it a decent amount, but usually for walks around our neighborhood or longer trips. DS 1 is pretty jealous of DS2 getting to ride in our single stroller, so it's been helpful to have times they can both ride. For everyday quick errands we just keep the single stroller in the car. We've already used the double stroller more than I had expected.

My kids are 2 years apart, and are now 1 and 3, and we use our double inline stroller (Britax B-ready) every single day.

We also live in a city and walk everywhere--or rather, the nanny walks everywhere with the girls during the day. We thought about getting a ride-on board thingie, but decided to wait and see if LO1 preferred to sit or stand more, and in the end, we figured out that when the top seat is facing backwards, LO1 can stand on the bottom seat and seat/play with her little sister. So there's no need for the ride-on board now.

That probably doesn't make sense, but my older girl stands where this girl in the bottom seat is sitting, and then she can see LO2.

My older two are 20 months apart and we definitely needed a double. We just had our third and have a similar dilemma. My olderesume kids are 2 & 4 now and fight over the top seat of our stroller. I think our solution will be to get a side by side double with Glider board. I'll probably wear the baby a lot so the older kids can use the stroller until the baby is able to go in it without the car seat. Maybe something like that would be an option for you?

I'm in a similar boat - my LO will be 2 y 9 m when his sibling is born in April. We live in the city and commute to daycare on foot. I have the UB Vista and plan to get the rumble seat and the board and hope he is cool with either of those options! I also plan to wear the new LO as much as I can at first, but commuting can get a little hot!

I'd probably stick with the ride on board and see how it goes.
Mine are two years and then one year apart. If it were only my oldest and youngest I wouldn't need the double.
I definitely needed it with the two year gap, and of course need it with the 20mo and 8mo. But my 3y8m old has ridden in it fewer that a dozen times since the winter (including major trips to the zoo, amusement parks, etc.). Worst case I wear the baby and have the bigger girls in the seats.

My kids are 2.5 years apart (32 months, if you want to be technical). DS enjoys being in the stroller so we knew a double would be heavily used for us. We have the City Select, and absolutely love it. It's not the lightest thing around, but I like we could use it as a single or a double without the footprint being any bigger.

@nana87: Our kids are just shy of 3 years apart. I think you'd be fine with the boogie board. We have a front-to-back double stroller and primarily use it in the configuration where the baby is in the front seat in his infant seat and our 3 year old can sit or stand on the seat in the back. She almost always chooses to stand anyway.

The thing is HEAVY. We live in the suburbs so we have a garage, and I still find myself rarely using the double stroller anywhere except on walks around the neighborhood because I can barely lift it into the back of our van.

Mine are 3 years apart. We did stroller with roller board attachment and it was fine. I talked to my older LO about how he would have to let the baby have the stroller and how cool it would be for him to ride the "skateboard". It totally worked and didn't regret not getting a double.

I think in your case, I would probably see if just the single works. You could decide, for any given day/activity, whether it makes more sense for LO1 to be in the stroller and to babywear LO2 (you'd still have the stroller basket to schlep the stuff)...or whether LO1 could boogie board/walk and LO2 gets to ride in the stroller. You'd just have to be firm with LO1 on the choice that was made that day/activity.

The biggest concern I'd have with a double in an urban environment is that the ones that have good suspension and a large enough basket to schlep are also the ones that tend to have a larger footprint (both in your house and on the sidewalk/public transport) and are generally heavy/harder to fold/carry/etc.

My girls are 2.5y apart, and we did the bumbleride indie twin. But we have a house and although we still use the stroller a fair amount, it's mostly on more "neighborhood" type of sidewalks as we head to the park, pool, library, or restaurants where it's size doesn't really matter! If/when I take it to someplace like the zoo, that's the only time I ever have to worry about folding/lifting it. Mostly it just gets wheeled right into/out of our storage room.

I also have LO3 on the way, so I know we'll get another couple years of use out of it, even though LO1 only uses it now when I convince her that we need to go fast :)

DS turned 4 in June and I'm due with #2 in early November. We have a jogging stroller and the City Mini single and our plan is to try to forgo the double and try to make do with babywearing or using both strollers should we ever need to use the stroller for our older one (which is already a rarity now). If we ever get to the point where we wished we would have had a double, we'll just buy it at that point.

I am thinking about trying to do a babywear/single stroller combo for the first few months at least (will be winter here) and then maybe get a Joovy Caboose Ultralight if my DD still seems to like the stroller at age 3.5 (she is fine with the stroller now at age almost 3).

We have the Uppababy Vista with both the rumble seat and the skateboard. My kids are 26 months apart. Right now (2.5 and 6 months) we use it a lot, because we spent a lot of time this summer out and about at, like, the zoo - places with a lot of walking. The extra seat was great to be able to confine him (we were usually able to get him to ride in it by saying it was snack time) and move more quickly.

I'm starting to think about what kind of new gear we're going to need for lo2, and a double stroller is a big question mark... If you have 2 (or more), what is their age gap? Did you decide to get a double, or if not, why not?

Here's a long ramble with my thoughts on pros/cons...feel free to skip and just tell me about your experience ;)

Our los will be just shy of 3 years apart. We live in a city and walk or use public transportation most of the time. We currently have an UB Cruz, so while we'll definitely get a boogie board, it doesn't fit with the rumble seat. Lo1 sometimes resists the stroller, but I still usually bring it to the park with us or out and about to help with carrying all our stuff. When we don't take it, it's usually because we're taking the bus, and I have to be super strategic about what all I bring with me--like I switched from using a tote bag to a back pack for my own work stuff so I have my hands more free on our daycare/work commute, or I have to take most stuff out of the diaper bag so it doesn't get to heavy since she often wants to be carried as well. When lo1 was smaller, I definitely preferred stroller to babywearing because of schlepping gear. (I found I couldn't walk very far with both her and the diaper bag without becoming a tired, sweaty mess). I could probably get by wearing lo2 while lo1 was in the stroller, or pushing lo2 while lo1 walks/goes on the boogie board, but I can foresee lo1 having tantrums about wanting to choose and it being hard to switch the stroller back and forth between various settings to accommodate her whims....On the other hand, a double would take up more space in our apartment...gahhh I just don't know!
