@Lindsay05: No advice, but wanted to congratulate you on your 3rd! So exciting. You’ve got this, mama, no matter which dr attends the birth.

I had a planned induction for my 3rd. In fact, my doctor and midwife team (they work together) scheduled me on that particular date at 6am for the morning bc my primary care was on call. But...the hospital got backed up and we didn't actually get to start the induction until closer to 10am. Both my doctor and midwife checked on me throughout the day and I was glad to know a familiar face (this was my 3rd child but the first time knowing my delivery team). Well, at 4pm I was at 10cm and ready to push but another midwife came in for check up. I know their shifts are from 7am-7pm and so I was confused as to where my team went. I mean, I didn't care they left but I wished they came to say bye or something. My main nurse who had been assisting me 99% of the time also had to leave at 5pm and didn't get to see the end result. Obviously during the actual pushing part, it didn't really matter nor did I have a choice but I was a little put off.

This happened with my first. The practice had me rotate for the last trimester so I had met all of the midwives and OBs by the time I delivered. The doctor who delivered my son wasn’t my first choice, but I felt she respected my wishes and was great. Everything went well. Try not to stress.

I changed practices at 30 weeks pregnant with my first and then was high risk so only saw one OB and then was induced, but the midwives in the practice handle the routine deliveries at the hospital, so during my 3 day induction I was attended by 5 midwives, only 1 of whom I'd ever met. The midwives actually spent a decent amount of time with me, but I didn't mind at all that I hadn't met them. We had a doula, which helped a lot with continuity of care, but even without her, I was totally fine with the rotating crew of strangers attending to me.

@Lindsay05: aw, you’re allowed to be a whiney complainy pregnant lady at this point. 🙂🙂

Seriously though - since you know it’s a likely possibility your primary OB won’t deliver, can you get a call schedule for the hospital so that you know who might deliver your baby when? ie If you go into labor Sat/Sun, it’s Dr. A, Mon/Tue it’s Dr. B, etc.?

For DD3 I had a scheduled induction, which I wrongly assumed meant my doctor would plan to be there. She was, however, able to tell me which doctor WOULD deliver my baby, so I read what I could about her and scheduled an appointment with her before my induction. It gave me a little peace of mind to at least know what to expect.

I'm sorry! For what it's worth, when I was in labor, the only medical person in the room was the nurse for 99% of the time I was there. The doctor only showed up at the very last minute, in fact she missed DD's birth by a few seconds. She's awesome, and I was very glad to see her, but it was really the nurses that did the "heavy lifting" of keeping an eye on me. I assume there were also other doctors on call that could have stopped by if needed.

I love my doctor, only saw her, and she came in when she wasn’t on call to deliver my first two babies. With my third she literally left that morning to visit her family in Columbia, and so I had a different doctor. I didn’t care for her, but really, it didn’t matter. The nurse basically did everything anyway, and I knew what to do since it wasn’t my first rodeo.

With my first, my doctor already said that there's a big chance she won't be at my birth and she wasn't. Another doctor that I'd never met delivered my girl and I was totally fine with it. He gave me the push I needed. To me, the nurses were what made my experience.

With my 2nd, I had a different OB and she did deliver and to me it really wasn't that big of a difference.

my OB group shares call on alternating weekend days with another OB group and I happened to go into labor on a day when the other group was on call. this is a pretty common practice in my area so I wasn't bothered. (however, I was induced with my first and had an induction scheduled, so it was surprising.) the doctor who was supposed to handle my induction actually texted me while I was in labor and said he was so bummed to miss me/my daughter but that I was in great hands! everything went great and as others have said, the L&D nurses handle a majority of the labor process in many/most situations, anyway.

Do you know who the backup is? I would try to get in for a consult ASAP and discuss your birth plan with that person.

In light of the high csection rate and emphasis on assisted labor in the U.S., I have worked hard to find providers I am comfortable with. I interviewed four providers for my first pregnancy and loved the doctor I ultimately chose. Unfortunately she retired and I wound up talking to four more this time. In my case I need someone who can work with the high risk details of my pregnancy and help me prioritize a vaginal delivery. (Many OBs require both babies to be head down, but some are comfortable as long as the first baby is head down.)

In your situation, I would do as much as possible to get on the same page with the new provider prior to the start of labor.

My doctor was out of town the weekend I went into labor. He and I both thought I'd go over due, and I wasn't dilated at all at my 39 week appointment (which was on Thursday, my labor started 12:30 am Sunday morning). So my delivery was with the on call doctor at the hospital, whom I'd never met (my doc was a single dr office), and I ended up with a C-section. But, everything ended up OK. And she (the on call doc) was really reassuring and capable.

So, all that to say, everything will be ok   :goodluck:

It’s perfectly normal to be sad! I will say, I had never met the anyone on my birth team before the day I had either of my babies. I saw a midwife practice but it was just whoever was on call the day of, and I had a wonderful experience. I agree it was the nurses that made the biggest difference.

I can totally understand why you are upset. I visited with all four doctors at my ObGyn practice throughout my pregnancy, but there was only one that I wanted to perform my cesarean. At one point I visited the hospital’s on call doctor practice at their clinic to see if they could give me a second opinion on a vaginal birth. As soon as DH and I walked in and later affirmed when the receptionist could schedule for a consult weeks after my due date I knew if I rolled the dice I’d end up getting cut anyway.

Can you meet the doctor who will fill in while yours is on vacation?

Ugh, how stressful!

I can't really offer any advice, but I can commiserate to a certain extent... when my first was born, I had a team of two midwives that I saw consistently. On the day I went into labour I saw midwife #1 in the clinic that morning and expected to have midwife #2 deliver my baby that night. When I paged to let them know that I was in labour, I was told by the dispatcher that midwife #2 was sick and that I would be contacted by another midwife that I had never even met before. Not what I wanted to hear while in labour for the first time in my life! I will say, though, the midwife I ended up with for my delivery was lovely and knowledgeable and everything worked out just fine in the end (as I'm sure your delivery will as well!) but it certainly made for some added stress.

I only saw my own OB for all my appointments with both my kids and he wasn't at either delivery. The first, he was on vacation (I delivered 2.5 weeks early). For my second, he wasn't on call that night (I went to the hospital around 1am). But things progressed so quickly once I got my epidural the on call doctor almost didn't make it! She came in, threw on some gloves and pretty much caught the baby.

It is perfectly ok to be sad your doctor won't be there to deliver your third, especially since they delivered your first two. But the ultimate goal is a healthy mom and baby!

In my experience the doctor didn't make an appearance until the very end and had little to do with my birthing experience. My first child was delivered by a medical student supervised by an OB I had never met before and I don't feel like it took anything away from the experience. In my opinion, the labor and delivery nurses contribute so much more to the birthing experience.

It’s been forever since I posted on these boards. I need some reassurance right now. I am expecting our third and my due date is on Sunday. My Dr who has delivered both of my girls will be away as of tonight until the 28th. There’s a very good chance I will have a different doctor delivering this baby. I am heartbroken and nervous because my doctor has seen me at every appointment for all of my pregnancies. I don’t know why this has me so incredibly sad and upset. I realize that all doctors are trained to deliver and the most important thing is that we are safe. However, there is that relationship between my doctor and I that makes the delivery process so much easier. Not sure what I’m looking for but I guess more of a place to vent. Thanks :bummed:
