@skiierchck99: Sorry I haven't been on for a while. Still very itchy. I had the ultrasound which showed no cysts. I saw my actual doctor last week and he wants me to try rubbing vitamin E and wiping the milk off with a damp water cloth instead of just drying it. Then I follow up in a week. At this point I've tried everything. I'm probably just going to have to deal with it until I'm done breastfeeding.

@MrsMom: When I had thrush, they treated me with over the counter stuff called Gentian Violet. This might be something to try since it's over the counter! You can get it at any pharmacy or online. It was amazing - relief within 24 hours. You just use a q-tip to put it on your nipples. FYI if you do use it, it's dark purple and it stains clothes and skin, so your nipples will be purple for a few days til it fades! And after nursing, your baby's mouth/lips might be purplish for a day or two.

I think it's so weird that they're so quickly dismissing thrush. When I had it, I didn't have any pus leakage, nipple changes, or redness, and the baby didn't show any signs of having it either. The only difference between me and the info you gave us is that mine hurt the most while I was nursing. My boobs/chest itched a little bit all the time, but it was AWFUL itching/burning while nursing.

@MrsMom: did they tell you anything at the ultrasound? When I had thrush it was like razors or cut glass. Bf definitely did not make it better. You could try clotrimazole on the nipples (wipe off before bed and then reapply after) just to see.

@MamaBear87: They didn't do testing. She said I would have some other symptoms such as pus leakage, nipple changes or discoloration/redness and pain. I really don't know what to think. I'm so frustrated and just want the itching to stop. I tried pushing for Diflucan just to try and she wouldn't give it to me.

I had my ultrasound Yesterday. If this pursists into next week I'll go back and try again for the Diflucan. Topical creams aren't doing anything. I'm starting to lean more towards maybe a blocked something??

@maddyz: My son doesn't have any signs anywhere...I'm just so confused. They said it should be painful to nurse, but I don't have pain. It actually feels better while he's nursing then the itching comes back when he's done.

That is exactly how I would describe my trush... it's horrible. My LO would get nasty diaper rash when I really noticed the itching. I had to treat it really aggressively to clear it. My LO never had the mouth symptoms that are common. Good Luck!

Well my Dr called me back and had me come in yesterday afternoon. The Dr and NP both said its definitely not thrush or an infection. They're scheduling me for an ultrasound and we'll go from there. I also spoke to two lactation consultants over the phone to see if they had any ideas, but they also suggested the ultrasound or Mammogram would be the way to go. So now I wait.

@MamaBear87: I'm waiting for the Nurse Practitioner to call me back. But if they do decide it's Thrush I will call his Dr and see if they will go ahead and treat him as well. Thank You!

@MrsMom: if you have it he should also be treated. Otherwise you'll just pass it back and forth.
And yes you can still feed him on that side

Thank you ladies, I was hoping it wasn't but I will call my Dr today. It's still safe to breastfeed him on that side right? His Dr wont treat him for thrush unless he shows signs.

Agree, sounds like thrush. I had it when my first was 2 weeks old - she didn't have any visible signs of having it, but dr treated us both. The itching/burning was almost unbearable, it was awful!

My nipples would be itchy when I didn't rinse my pump flanges well. I used the medela wipes, and sometime the leftover soap would irritate my skin.

However, because your seems so constant, definitely go to you doctor. It is very possible you have Thrush and your baby doesn't.

My guess would be thrush inside your breast...can you call your OB? If it’s inside the breast and not topical you’d probably need diflucan to clear it up.

Backstory: Breastfed my first son for 16 months with Mastitis around 6 months old once.
DS2 is now 4.5 months and has been breastfed when i'm home and only bottle fed breastmilk at daycare. Have not introduced him to anything else yet.

Problem: My one breast is extremely itching all the time. Sometime it's not so bad, and other times I can't stand it. itching feels deep and when my son latches it almost feels relieved?? but as soon as he's done it itches again. No pain, no abnormal redness or sores/blisters. Doesn't look cracked. Pumping makes it itch more. I don't leak throughout the day, and it's only the one breast.
DS2 had his 4 month checkup last week and I asked to check him for signs of Thrush and he was clear.

Any ideas, comiseration, or tips? I was looking for maybe a cream I should try that's safe?
