My daughters looked a little wet like that and the Ped said it was fine to bathe her, just be sure to dry it well and give it air time. It dried out within a few days.

@Mama Bird: @Dr. Pepper: @PinkElephant: thank you, this is what I was trying to refer to. My memory of it is so hazy I couldn't think of it.

Same as what @Dr. Pepper: said.

We were really nervous about having this done for DD2 because we were told the silver nitrate would leave a permanent dark grey mark on her skin. It sort of did, but you really can't see it because of where it ends up inside the folds of the belly button.

My son's looked just like that. It was an umbilical granuloma. It was cauterized (twice) with a silver nitrate stick. Super easy and painless for baby. Not at all scary like the word "cauterized" sounds.

Looks like there might be an umbilical granuloma - that's just a bit of leftover tissue, no big deal. Both of my kids had them and they would just keep oozing after the cord fell off. The doctor had to cauterize it with silver nitrate to help it dry up.

C's fell off at 10 days and looked like this for a long time. After a month-ish of dealing with the oozing, her per ended up cauterizing it (I think it was chemically cauterized.) she did have a small umbilical hernia, though I don't think it was related. The oozing and staining clothes was a pain, but otherwise it was no big deal.

DS's cord looked like that when it fell off after 1 week. I just cleaned it gently with soap and water when I did sponge baths and it stopped oozing within a few days. I was directed by the hospital not to put anything on it such as alcohol.

I don't remember what DS's looked like, but it did ooze for a few days. It fell off within a week. We just made sure it was clean and dry.

DD's fell off really quickly (day 6, I think?) and it looked like that. It started to ooze and smelled a little weird. We were still going to the ped frequently for weight checks, so the dr cleaned it up and applied silver nitrate. We actually had to go back to have it done a couple times because it just would not heal up. I'd just keep an eye on it and if it seems to be oozing or causing her discomfort, call the dr!

This happened with DS1. I would clean it but it wouldn't heal completely. The pediatrician had to use some silver nitrate and then it stopped.

@T.H.O.U.: that's what i was thinking. is he seeing his dr anytime soon? would def be worth asking, or even just having a nurse look.

DS's kind of oozed for a week or two. Our pedi said to clean it with a q-tip and alcohol once a day.

It looks normal to me. Care for the cord changed a lot between DD1 and DD2, and I remember DD2's cord looked more like that when it fell off.

It may have just fallen off a bit too soon.

Just make sure it doesn't get infected. We had a bit of bleeding with my sons and we did use some alcohol swabs to dry it out.
