@irene: All the extras won't matter as much when he is feeling better! N was in a cast for nearly a month and meds for longer. So there were lots of extras and once he was all better he didn't notice the extras had gone away, he was too busy being his normal crazy self.

@looch: @MrsRcCar: Thanks ! We stopped the antibiotics for 48 hours. DS was very very sick and I was so very worried. I was planning to take him in this (Monday) morning anyway. He was really very sick this morning, shaking and 103F. We went to see our regular doctor and boy, that was a night and day difference. He was so thorough and examined everything. We did a blood test and urine test and all are OK. his throat is no longer too red so that's not strep. We didn't see any ulcers in his mouth so I am not quite sure why he is complaining about his mouth - at first i thought it could be herpes but Dr thinks he would be bleeding on his gums / mouth right now. He was prescribed with antibiotics before because the other doctor thought he had bronchitis (out of no where) and I asked our doctor if he heard anything in his lungs and he said no his lungs is clear. What???? Our doctor thinks it was some kind of sinus infection. We got a different antibiotics that supposed to taste very good (I request the pharmacy to add strawberry flavor to it even though it already has strawberry flavor. Just in case!!! Haha), be more gentle and wouldn't cause as much diahrrea. He just took the first dose and napping right now. I am hoping he'd feel better soon.

@Canoli: I have been through a version of that when DS was a baby!!! Good thing he is all better now!

Just feel so bad for my boy... He has been acting alright all morning because of Advil and now he is going down for a nap, but you can hear he is very congested. And then he complained his mouth, as in his lips hurts. He complained about that since Friday but Saturday morning the doc checked him and didn't see anything. I honestly don't know what kind of illness caused red throat, high fever, painful lips, coughing, and some diahrrea. We will check it out tomorrow I just hope he stays relatively ok before that.

Thank you again for your support!!!

@irene: been there done that too. Just last weekend actual. My youngest had an ear infection and had started on antibiotics and broke out in a full body rash! Even though he was acting normal and I called our on call doc and they thought it was viral I was a nervous wreck all day.

Parenting has aged my husband A LOT!

Please don't be so hard on yourself. Being a mommy is so tough. I always struggle with what is doctor visit worthy and the wait and see approach but in the end I always feel the rather safe than sorry approach is better. We have taken our son to the doctor multiple times in a week before. You are being a great mommy and looking out for his best interest.

I would probably hold off antibiotics for now and go back in tomorrow.

Hang in there. I know it's easier said than done.

@brownie: I am trusting my mommy instincts which has all been dead wrong!!! :( I was indeed just crying and texting my friend how incompetent I am.... and it is not even about awww you are not a failure. It is that how can I screw up so badly??

I am going to try to stay off until at least tomorrow morning and take him in first thing to check for strep and other things. I am not going to see that stupid doc that didn't even check his throat the first time I saw him. OR best scenario is somehow he gets magically better today and it is all viral. Please do wish me luck....

I am so sorry to hear about your sister's son....

This is not a fail, this is you trusting your mommy instincts. That is so important. It is likely just a virus that antibiotics won't touch. If it is strep they can give you better antibiotics. We just went through the rounds of sickness in our home with pneumonia.

As for mommy instinct, you must follow yours. My sisters son was diagnosed with strep. He didn't get better in 24 hours and in fact got worse. She knew this wasn't right but still called multiple people to feel better. We all told her to take him back in. She took him back in and got a leukemia diagnosis. It was early and treatment has been successful. This is a worse case scenario.

@anbanan15: Thank you so so much for your thoughts.

He was coughing quite consistently but doesn't cough all the time. He did cough during the night when he sleeps.

I just feel so bad because I did ask if it is OK for us to stop the antibiotics. If not they wouldn't have told me to stop. They said it is OK to give him a break of 48 hours.

Motrin is the same as Advil is that right? Yes I am alternating it with tylernol, but on Friday Advil wasn't doing anything really (I almost had to rush to urgent care) so I've been sticking with Tylernol.

Please please wish me luck that this fever will magically go away today and it is indeed viral. My client will probably kill me because my son is just mysteriously sick as my project starts.

Not everyone develops a rash with strep or sometimes a rash can develop after the strep clears (scarlet fever). Some people also develop a harmless rash after having a high fever, so that's another possibility if you see a rash form. Don't freak out if you see one, but of course I would still get it evaluated if one does develop.

What is the cough like? Sometimes people cough when their throats are irritated, but it's not really a cough that would be due to respiratory illness (when my kids allergies are bad they cough to clear their throats. I always have to stop for a moment and think about it).

As for the antibiotics, I would stop them as instructed by his doctor and nurse. When you go in for the throat culture, if it is in fact strep or they do decide to restart the antibiotics, I would ask for a different one because of the diarrhea that was significant and clearly connected with this antibiotic and improved once stopping it.

Try not to worry too much about the actual temperature (unless it is sky high, but 103.2 is still okay). His body is doing it's job and you are doing an amazing job at yours by keeping him hydrated and comfortable. You can alternate doses of Tylenol and Motrin to help control his fever too. I'm not sure if you are doing that or know you can do that, so I just wanted to mention it. Hang in there, keep asking the right questions, take care of your little guy, and he should be better in no time.

You are not a failure. When H had strep this year, she didn't present with the usual symptoms either. She had a mild fever, cough, and very runny nose. She was also generally cranky. We only tested for strep because we knew she had been exposed, and we sent her back to daycare when the rapid test was negative. We opted to do the 48 hour test and it turns out she did have strep! So the right antibiotics can make all the difference if it is strep. Diarrhea can also be a side effect of the antibiotics, which is why that got better when you stopped.

@looch: I know.... if they gave me a solid diagnose /test results on Thursday I would have finish the antibiotics at all costs. The thing is it was more of a guesstimate and I honestly don't know why we were even given antibiotics. Our preferred doc wasn't available and the one we saw didn't even check his throat for the first time (???!!!) Sigh.... Just overall very bad luck and mommy's very bad decisions.

I just called the nurse line and they said I should stop the antibiotics until tomorrow morning (48 hours). This way we can really rule out strep on Monday morning. I feel so bad I woke the nurse up at 6am. I am really hoping and praying that this is viral and it will go away today. Please wish us luck.

My son had diarrhea after a course of antibiotics, the advice from our ped was to finish the course of Medication, add probiotics and keep hydrating. Now, when we need abx, we avoid that specific kind. That's a side effect of that particular kind, but also others.

It's me again. Another massive mommy fail I feel like a horrible person. I will call nurse in the morning but I need advice on what to do.

So DS (3.5 years old) broke out with a 101.8 fever on Thursday. We went to the doc and they suspected he had bronchitis and gave him antibiotics. He did not cough or nothing, not even runny nose, so I always suspected it wasn't bronchitis and was very skeptical about the antibiotics. After a day of antibiotics his temp rises and didn't feel better but I continued. He just wasn't getting better at all on Friday (in fact it was worse as I almost had to take him to ER because his fever wasn't coming down after Advil, at 103.2) and the struggle of giving him meds plus the excessive diahrrea (10 times in 12 hours) made me want to stop the antibiotics, if it wasn't doing anything. He did feel better on Friday overnight though but we went in to the doctor again on Saturday morning because I already made an appointment.

At the doc he saw a bright red throat and somehow he didn't do a strep test on Thursday (?!!?!?!) however he said since he has been on antibiotics he would not be able to get an accurate result. I asked if we could stop the antibiotics because it didn't get him better the first and second day, and he agreed that he should have gotten better by yesterday, so he said it is ok to give it a break for 48 hours if he took a turn for the worst then we can restart.

He was ok throughout Saturday and I was relieved and for sure it was something vital... Until tonight, his temperature went up to 103.2 again.

Now I am sitting here at 530am freaking out and wonder if I made a fatal mistake of even asking to stop the antibiotics. Maybe he was strep throat all along and he started getting better on Friday evening. However he didn't have a rash like mayo clinic suggested. I also can't go in to get an accurate strep test because it hasn't been 48 hours yet. It still can be viral and if it is indeed viral I would hate to make him suffer through 10 days of diarrhea.

What would you do if you were me - would you restart antibiotics in the morning, or wait another day? I will call the nurse in the morning but I want to hear your thoughts on if there are viral things that does take weird fever patterns like that and such.
