I get this sometimes. My doctor once told me it was the cartilage on my ribs rubbing against the bones.

Maybe it's this? My sister and I both have something similar at times and that is the best I've been able to diagnose via the internet, haha.

You guys are awesome! But it sounds like it could be any number of things and I just ran out of ibuprofen, haha. Although I'm relieved no one said "Sounds like lung cancer." :)

@maybebaby: I don't think it's stress related! It started before all the stuff with Xander! I wish I could blame it on stress!

@IRunForFun: When I press on my ribs, it doesn't really bother me, although I've noticed that laying on my side (either side) seems to bother it more. And I can't think of anything I could've done to strain it or pull a muscle or anything! It's so bizarre!

I've had that. I always describe it as my lung being caught in my ribs. Not that I think that's possible, But my cure has always been to take that deep breath. Hurts like a mofo, but once I take the breath, it feels better.

I've had this occasionally, and one time I complained to DH because he made me laugh and it hurt so bad and he said "you probably just popped out a rib a bit, happens to guys in the gym all the time." Whaaat?! So he had me raise up my arm on that side and stretch away from that side (does that make sense? Curve like a big ol' banana to your right if your left hurts) and breath slowly to see if that helped. Took a few tries and little wiggling, but then I felt a *pop* and I could immediately take a deep breath again. Hope that's all it takes for you, feel better soon!

this happens to me sometimes, and it always goes away within 2 or 3 days. i think it's straining muscles from sleeping funny in my case, but it won't hurt to ask a doc about it!

Gathering from your weight post for X and mention of ER visit (I hope everything is OK!!), it sounds like you've had a stressful weekend! Could it be a stress attack? Or was Friday before things started happening? I notice pain breathing sometimes when I am really stressed out. Hope you feel better!

Hard to tell from your description, but I had what felt like pain by the side of my left rib cage once, and it ended up being pleurisy.

@Adira: I'm certainly no doctor, but I have had pain similar to what you're describing, sometimes fleeting if it's a cramp, once lasting a few days when I did some ab exercises incorrectly and strained a muscle right under my ribs. Can you think of anything you might have done to strain the area? Does it hurt to massage it or press on it?

Obviously if you have any other symptoms or it gets worse you should consult a doctor!

@Adira: I had this just a couple weeks ago. It was following a cold. I once hiccuped and the pain literally brought tears to my eyes. My primary care doc is actually a fellow parent at our day care so I asked her about it after it had been going on for a couple days. It happened to be a Friday when I saw her and she told me to wait out the weekend and if I wasn't better Monday to come in for a chest X-ray. I was better by Monday so in my case it was just some minor swelling in my lungs from the cold. But my doc said walking pneumonia had been going around so that was her concern.

Eta: Advil helped in the meantime

@Adira: happens to me here and there. Sometimes the cartilage surrounding my ribs and breast bone gets inflamed but steroids calm it down pretty fast. Also the other thing I notice that works to relief it when the first doesn't work I get adjusted by the chiropractor but everyone is very different. I would call your gp and ask the nurse line what they suggest.

If your doc has a nurse you could call for advice, I'd maybe do that? Not quite the same but this summer I had a weird new issue where I suddenly couldn't take a deep breath. Even when just sitting still, I would feel like I could breath normally but not deeply and it sort of made my chest burn. I thought maybe UR infection but I called the nurse and she suggested zyrtech and what do you know-- I have allergies I never knew about before! (Point being, sometimes it is something super easy that a 5 minute call can fix).

Anyone know what's wrong with me? I get this stabbing intense pain in my left side (at my ribs) whenever I try to take a deep breath (including yawning, sneezing, laughing - anything that requires a deep breath). It's so intense that I'm usually cut off short - my yawn isn't complete, my sneeze is half-hearted, etc.

Anyone have a clue what this could be? It came on suddenly Friday night and is still going on. Besides the pain when breathing deeply, I feel totally fine. I can breathe normally, just not deeply (and probably because of that, I feel the urge to take a deep breath constantly and can't).

Help! :)
