I think the ped is going to put them in touch with a nutritionist. I just hope they take this seriously this time, because the ped started telling them this over a year ago and nothing changed :(

@Mrs. Jacks: I second this! 4 year olds shouldn't need to lose weight- just grow and not gain. Poor kid. Are there specialists near by?

Oh man that sucks. Sounds like everyone needs to work together to make sure the kid is healthy. Even if the food is unhealthy, portion control and some outdoor activities should help quite a bit. Poor guy :(

Usually peds would recommend not to lose weight but to hold steady at the same weight as he grows. Before the family does anything rash, I'd highly recommend that SIL talks to a peds obesity specialist and nutritionist. General pediatricians aren't the experts at childhood obesity!

Poor guy! Childhood obesity is such a big problem. How does your SIL feel about it? Do they have a plan? One benefit of being a kid, I guess, is that you will grow into it if you don't put on more weight. But you'd still have to workout and eat right and all that stuff. And its hard to get lots of outdoor time in the winter now!

That's rough. Does he need to lose the weight or just not put on more? DH will attest it's easy to eat a LOT of rice. Maybe they could cut back on it. Is he getting juice when he could be getting water instead? Could being more active help? Hopefully the ped offered advice on how to keep his diet in check, and hopefully your ILs will take this seriously and help keep his weight in check.

Yikes, my nephew is 4 yrs old and he is a BIG boy. He doesn't necessarily look "fat" but he is built like a tank and really solid! He's 65 lbs and his pediatrician just told my SIL that he needs to be closer to 45 - 50 lbs.

I'm just thinking how hard it is an adult to lose 15 - 20 lbs, how do you get a little boy to do it?? The hard part is that my in-laws exclusively watch him, and he actually even lives with them!! So my MIL cooks Chinese food every day, and there is always rice and meat :( It's hard for grandma to feed him "healthy" food because that is not their usual diet.
