I had this issue recently with the flu shot. Since my LO needs the 2 part one, they give 1 and then 2nd is a month later. Well I get to the office and hear the receptionist tell someone over the phone it has to be at least 30 days apart. It had been 27 days since her first one. No one mentioned that on the phone when i called so I couldn't get it. What a waste of time!

Aside from insurance/government issues, two reasons NOT to do the shot a week before travel:
1) MMR can cause a reaction/fever 7-10 days later...my kiddo had a high fever
2) the vaccine won't really be effective after just a week, you would want at least two weeks to reach peak efficacy

Because we just traveled to SoCal and my LO2 started daycare at 9.5m she got her shots at 9m old. She'll have a 90-95% security of being immunized. Once she has her booster at 15m she's up to the regular 99,5% or so. It was really important to both DH and I that she had had the shots and the doc was fine with it once he informed us on the slightly lower percentage of it really working. (also there are two different vaccines here (Germany) and one is ok to give before 12m and one is not).

ETA: A booster is done here for all kids because it has shown to secure a better immunity. (That's how I as a non-medical professional understood the new guidelines that came out a couple of years ago).

@MrsTal: I haven't read all the replies, but our ped told me at the last visit that they had issues with the schools sending kids back to be re-vaccinated if their shots weren't exactly 6 months apart. We happened to get an appointment about two days early of the six month mark and since we were already going to have to come back the next week for a flu shot (they were all out that day) he recommended we wait and do the other vaccine the next week.

@winniebee: @lilteacherbee: @Truth Bombs: Yep - our office is very specific about there being a specific amount of time between certain shots. We were late with some of ours, which is why our one year well visit is going to be 3 weeks later!

As @lilteacherbee: and @winniebee: pointed out my understanding is that it's more about time lapsed between shots. So if we were two weeks late on LO's 6month shots, then we couldn't do the 1 year shots unit at least two weeks late as well.

@winniebee: Yes, regarding the time between vaccines. I can't remember which appt it was, but they wouldn't give LO1 his shots because it hadn't been exactly 6 months or whatever since the last round. We were 3 days early (even though he had already turned that age), so we had to go back.

Did sound crazy at first but maybe it's for liability reasons. You could look up the inserts on the vaccine. Maybe the clinical pharmacology inserts specifically say to wait til they turn a year old.

Oh, maybe insurance won't pay for it until the 1 year mark.

So it could be drug effectiveness or maybe insurance coverage reasons.

We were traveling out of the country then moving so I wanted an appt the day before my daughters first birthday ( our flight was on her bday). All the appointments after the first month id always done sometime the week before so I thought it shouldn't be a problem. They still said no. I'm like we're talking about 15 hours between allowed not allowed but nope. They are particularly strict about the first birthday shots.

@SweetiePie: Where do you live?

I have to say, this is a pretty interesting topic. I haven't tried to book an appt before his birthday/month, but I will ask the ped next time we see her what their policy is. We have had to book his 4 month vaccines 3-4 weeks late, and the only requirement for the next round was that it was at least 4 weeks later, so his 6 month vaccines were on time.

The only shot my daughter got early was her 18 month booster (Canada) since we were moving across country to a remote area. She was about 17 months at the time. It was actually the doctors idea, we were in as a family because my husband was getting a prescription renewal prior to the move.

I think it also may be related to having insufficient studies for effectiveness/safety for babies before a certain age? I guess if there are doctors who will give the shots then maybe they are making a calculated risk assessment based on the situation.

@Sapphire: I do see your point., and the reasoning behind having regulations. I was just speaking from the standpoint that I couldn't see there being a difference in the immune response generated from one week to the next. Playing devil's advocate, wouldn't it be better to wait a week or a month, or a year to ensure that the child is stronger, or more able to deal with the effects of a live virus? The answer is no, of course, because unvaccinated babies are known to be very vulnerable, and so we weigh the risk of vaccinating them earlier (at 1 yr) to ensure, as much as possible, that they are protected.

Given how contagious measles is, I would still want my LO to receive his vaccine a week early if going to DL if at all possible, even if I were not reimbursed. Although, I see from some to the above responses that it might not even be possible to do so, being in Canada. I still recommend talking to your insurer.

@Astro Bee: where do you make the cutoff then for needing a booster? One week is okay, what about two weeks? What about a month?

That's the reason for guidelines.
I think in this case given that there is travel it makes sense to get he shot and its roughly within guidelines. The guidons are based on typical immune response...there are multiple reasons MMR isn't usually given sooner including that the immunity doesn't stick and it's a live virus.

For LO 1 I somehow scheduled one of his well visits like 2 days before he actually turned that age and they wouldn't give him the shots either!

I was told I had to come back 2 days or later to get those shots. At the time I was super annoyed because it was hard to make time to come to the hospital with work schedules luckily I could get the shots on a weekend.

I made it a point after that to *always* schedule their well visits at least a day after they turn that age.

I asked why they couldn't give the shots and they told just told me that they usually have to give shots after the date they are due and not before.

I'd say not crazy, especially given this past year's outbreaks. I understand that insurance mandates are crazy in the US, so I'd probably call your insurance company first, to see if this is a policy and if so, if there is a way around it. I would pose it as a potential savings to not only your LO's health, but also to any claims if your LO gets sick, due to being unimmunized against a very contagious disease for the sake of 1 week. Honestly, sometimes common sense needs to prevail over dogmatic adherence to policy. I can't see needing to have a booster either, since if you had one a week later you wouldn't need it. If you needed to pay out of pocket, could you? I'm not sure how much the vaccine is.

We traveled to Europe with our LO when she was 11 months, so our doctor gave her MMR (and wanted us to give her Chicken Pox vaccine) early at 10 months to allow for any reaction to wane prior to travel. I refused the Chicken Pox vaccine early, as I wasn't as concerened about that, and just got it on schedule. But the MMR we did indeed get early. The only problem with that is that the shot doesn't "count" legally for school vaccinations in my state (CA) so LO got another MMR shot at 15 months and will need to get an additional THIRD shot at some point prior to entering school. If you get the first MMR shot after age 1 you only need one additional shot prior to entering school.
