Our doctor told us to just do saline and not suction when we were dealing with the same thing!

I haven't tried the nosefrida for a cough (though my 2 year old seems to be heading in the same direction with her cold/ cough :( )

But, this video is how I do it. It works better than having someone else hold her down actually, just get her legs wedged tight between your thighs, head in your armpit, one arm pins her arms down and you hold the nosefrida with the other arm. Clearly, my kid hated it! She has always loved the saline spray though!

She also learned to blow her nose pretty young which helps so much now. I haven't used the nosefrida in a long time.

@MenagerieMama: We take two separate tactics for our 16 month twins for the Nose Frida. One of them thinks it is the hilarious, so he just sits in the recliner in their room and let's me do it! We make funny noises and turn it into a game. I've even let him practice doing it to me (he can't suck hard enough so nothing happens but he thinks it's amazing). No amount of game playing will keep DD still, though, so I have DH hold her firmly on his lap and do it as fast as I can. We take a lot of breaks and try to make it fun, but it's still a little traumatic. DH puts one arm around her shoulders and holds both her hands with the other arm/hand which keeps her fairly still. Luckily both kids think the mist is fun (we joke that they're going to end up huffing in high school because they love the spray up the nose) so we can do that pretty frequently, even if the snot sucking is only halfway successful.

@twodoghouse: Good idea! I hadn't thought about aggressive de-snotting before bedtime. I usually clean up her nose but that's it. We have a nose frida but haven't used it. Any tips on using it for a very squirmy 12 mo old? She barely will let us wipe her nose I'm having a hard time envisioning us using the nose frida well. Though I bet that would help a lot. And I'll also try to get some of that saline spray. I wish the poor thing could just blow her nose!

We dealt with this recently too. The thing that seemed to work was using a saline nasal spray (the Little Remedies mist works well for us) before their baths to get everything flowing out the nose (instead of down the throat). Then I Nose Frida-ed right before bed to suck out as much possible. I have my LOs sit up on DH's lap and I get a lot more than if they are laying down. That seemed to clear them out before bed. One time I did have to repeat the mist and snot sucking MOTN though because DS was so stuffed up he could barely nurse, which seemed to frustrate him and get the coughing going. Good luck! I hope she gets over it quickly!

Poor LO was sick 2 wks ago with a fever and congestion/runny nose. Fever is gone and she's back to her usual (but snottier) self, but the past week she has been having an awful cough at night. She goes to sleep fine, but then wakes up to eat per usual (though usually 2x instead of her usual 1x -and she's 12 mo, so to be fair she doesn't *need* to wake up to eat, tell her that) and has this horrible coughing fit that takes 30-45 min to resolve. She has rarely woken up with the cough itself. She sounds gurgly, but not super congested, so I can only think it's from the drainage and somehow nursing at night just stirs it up and makes her cough.

Any idea on how to help? I end up carrying her around sitting up and bouncing/rocking until she gets sleepier and the cough dies down, but she threw up from coughing so hard last night so I'm trying to see what else I can do until this blows over. I would elevated the end of her crib but she is a massive mover and would end up with her feet in the air I'm sure! I don't know if a humidifier would help this kind of cough either. Her well child exam was yesterday so I don't think she has any underlying thing making this worse. I think it's just a crummy daycare virus. She's just so fine any other time it's weird!
