Thank you everyone for the ideas, you all really got my optimal storage juices going. I even looked up space saving kiddie coat racks. For the space we have I think the best solution is a simple hook rack that I can attach to the wall @caitcat:

@Ms. RV: I’ve been living under an infomercial rock and hadn’t heard of Magic Hangers. Those look pretty neat. I asked LO where he wanted his costumes and ihe likes having all his toys on the same floor. There goes my meal prep while he plays case.

What about magic hangers? That way you can hang his stuff up and easily tote it around. You could hang it on the back of a dining chair while you do meal prep.

Using hooks for dress up stuff has really helped my four year old put stuff away on her own. We'd had costumes just in a big bin for a while, and it was a huge mess...she usually dumped everything. I hung a small rack like this one on the back of a door in our playroom and it holds most of the costumes (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80347078/)

I haven't come up with a great solution for the dress up accessories (so many plastic tiaras!) but the hooks helped a lot for the costumes themselves.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: hmmm. We have our dress up stuff in the upstairs playroom- and I like that it’s out of the way and not on the main floor (our “formal living room” is a secondary playroom on the main floor, then a spare bedroom is the official playroom upstairs). My kids are old enough to play up there unsupervised and on play dates the kids are usually up there alone. So to me that sounds more like your entry level play area, but I’m assuming there is extra supervision needed because of the entry/ door? My younger one is 3 and can put the dress up clothes on and off mostly by herself now. If your LO still needs help getting dressed that would push me to keep the dress up stuff on the main floor.

@erinbaderin: do you have a link to your rack? I’d like to check out the dimensions. @Foodnerd81: you have me an idea- a rack with S-hooks might work if I really want LO to put the costumes back himself.

Any thoughts on where to put the dress up area- entry floor/ play room or kitchen floor?

I made DD a dress up corner in her room. Basically hung a rack and put everything there with a mirror. She loved it! I've attached a photo but this was before I hung more stuff up.. lol.. she has about 5 princess dresses that were also hung up.

We have an old short dresser that i converted into a dress up closet (a la Pinterest). It has a shower rod that I hang the dress up clothes on hangers from. But this method basically requires that I’m the one hanging the clothes up since they can’t put them on hangers yet.

What about a row of wall hooks? Then LO could hang them up himself and see what he has to play with. You could even use command hooks to keep it easy and temporary. We have loads of fluffy princess dresses in my dress up closet but the hooks would work extra well for the basic dress up things like fire fighter, doctor coat, etc, I think. Then I would put a basket on the floor near it for hats and crowns and such.

We bought a rack for our costumes and I love it. Before we had them in a bin and they were always a big tangled mess and everything got dumped out when they needed something. Now they’re all hanging, it looks super cute, and everything is easy to find. I’d go that route.

Hey Ladies, could use your help to brainstorm some ideas before I go out and buy something.

We live in a three story townhome. Entry floor holds the majority of LO’s toys. I put his dress up clothes & accessories inside a storage ottoman along with a blanket. LO cannot easily open the ottoman by himself and I think he’s already forgotten there are clothes inside.

The second floor living room just has his tray of superheros, kiddie table & chairs, arts & crafts cart. His bedroom is on the top floor and there are just books in his room. I haven’t put his clothes away so right now his closet is completely empty.

LO loves dress up and I’d like for him to get some more use out of his costumes. When LO plays dress up he’ll go through about 3 costume changes and then want to move on to another activity.

Here’s what I’m mulling over.

1) putting his costumes in his closet
Pro: hanging space already
Con: 3rd floor; out of sight for majority of the day

2) buy a toy chest or rack for the 2nd floor
Pro: easy for him to use; dress up could be on the same floor during meal prep
Con: open storage not super attractive; won’t have space to relocate his play kitchen* that may be better suited on 2nd floor closer to kiddie table

3) buy a toy chest or rack for the entry floor
Pro: space available if play kitchen is relocated to 2nd floor; store ottoman making room for more floor space to play or swap for a train table
Con: entry level; sole activity is supervision

I thought about a pop up hamper that could be more portable to move his costumes around the different floors. But a) wouldn’t they always be a wrinkled mess? and b) wouldn’t that mean he’d have to dump everything out to get the 1,2, or 3 he wanted?

Brainstorm a solution with me. Links to products are appreciated.

*IKEA play kitchen is now just $79!!
